All library books checked out by students during fall term were due Tuesday, December 18. We're usually able to renew materials you are still using. Ask someone on the library staff to assist with your renewal BEFORE Dec. 18. Books not returned or renewed by the deadline will be presumed lost, you will get coal in your stocking, and bills will appear on your seminary account.
Library's used book sale a success
The library reports that many books found new homes as a result of the sale. That's a lot of dimes! The remaining books will be picked up by "The Lift" a St. Paul organization that works with youth. The Lift operates an online used book business to teach employment skills and employ urban youth. Read more.

COMMUNITY NEWS
The Christmas Finals Story 'Twas the night before finals and all through the school, not a chair or seat open, not even a stool.
This was no time to sleep! Students filled the library. There was no time to shave, they were looking quite hairy.
Study tables were filled with deep thought-thinking heads. At the back of each one: a vision of beds.
But study they did, because study they must! For professors filled syllabi with dates that were "just."
So often you'd hear a sigh or a gasp, or a "Why did I sleep through Paul Capetz's class?!"
And, "Which Niebuhr is this? I just can't recall. Barbara Ann's handouts mention no Niebuhr at all!"
"Now just you calm down," a student would chime, "Remember, Bob told us, 'one day at a time.'"
"Quiet down!" another student would say, "I'm trying to exegete Matthew today!"
So much tension on campus, so many hard feelings. It seemed Christmas had lost all its good-feeling meanings.
Who could save the students? Well, Santa of course! He appeared with his beard and a strange-antlered horse.
He exclaimed, "Ho-ho-ho! You need a Christmas eruption!" "Oh, Santa," they sighed, "it's pronounced 'deconstruction.'"
"I know you are all overwhelmed," and he smiled. "But do not forget, in a very short while,
Your family and friends and loved ones will be near. Soon finals will end when Christmas is here!"
Such wise words from a man who wore red all year-long, but the students did know, Santa couldn't be wrong!
So with smiles on their faces, Santa packed up his sleigh, left the students to study and went on his way.
But they heard him exclaim, through the snow and the slush, "Merry finals to all, and to all an A-plus!"

Bigelow Chapel maintenance and improvements
If you have not already heard, we are re-carpeting the Bigelow Chapel! We have now set a date for this installation - Dec. 19-21. We chose a time that hopefully does not conflict with events in this space. This will be the culmination of some major work that has been done to preserve the excellence of this beautiful space. Here is a quick rundown of things Team Maintenance has done to preserve Bigelow:
- Caulking of the outer wall - thus stopping the severe water damage we were experiencing.
- Sheetrock repair and painting of the processional wall.
- Wood restoration of the benches which were badly damaged from water and use.
- New carpet has been installed!!
Let me take this brief opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of keeping this space beautiful.
Please keep food and beverages - even covered beverages - out of this space. Please be extremely cautious when burning candles or placing any container with water - vases, vessels, etc.
Please help us keep it as beautiful as possible

INSTITUTE FOR THE SUPPORT OF PASTORAL MINISTRIES
Narrative Resources for Pastoral Counseling
Tuesday, February 12, 2013
In this course we will focus on Narrative Counseling theory and the resources it offers to pastoral caregivers. This Narrative Counseling approach, highly influenced by various liberation theories, reflects an attentiveness to both culture and person. It is deeply respectful, relies on a consultative rather than an expert model, and is elegant in both its simplicity and thoroughness. Narrative theory's efficient and effective qualities as well as the de-centering of the counselor in the counseling process make this approach particularly well-suited to both parish pastors and to pastoral care specialists. This one-day course is open to the public. Instructor: Christie Neuger, Founder and Director of The Institute
Fee: $65.00, $35.00 for students in a degree program at United
Deadline to register: Tuesday, February 5
