Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

We are very excited to start inviting new families into our community on March 2nd when we have our lottery for the incoming class of 9th graders. As we've mentioned before, many of our incoming families first hear about us from our current families and we are very grateful that you have been spreading positive things about Rainier in your communities. If you have any family friends or neighborhood acquaintances that are considering applying for Rainier's Class of 2019, remind them that they have the best chance of getting a seat for next year if they apply at www.summitps.org/apply by March 1st.

As our class of 2019 comes together, we are piloting a new program called Bulldog Buddies. This is a program where new Rainier families are matched up with a current student or parent to get questions answered and to get to know before they start up at school next year. There is very minimal responsibility if you decide to be part of the program, just responding to current families if they reach out to you and sharing your phone number or email address with them so that they can get a hold of you easily. If you are interested in being a Bulldog Buddy for our class of 2019, please fill out this form and we'll get back to you in early March.  Thank you!
Respectfully,

Jesse Roe, Executive Director
Kevin Bock, Assistant Director

Grade Level Study Trips

11th grade left on their Study Trip this morning. 10th grade leaves Thursday morning. We are grateful to the many parents who are driving and chaperoning these trips, as well as those who have brought in donations of cash and snacks for the trips.

Families of 9th grade students:
Please email Mr. Griffin (sgriffin@summitps.org) if you are available to drive/chaperone for the 9th grade Study Trip on March 12-March 13. We are still in need of several drivers still so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, please sign and return the (PINK) study trip permission slip forms by March 2. Students should return this to Mr. Griffin as well.

Sadie's Dance - March 6

Rainier will be hosting a Sadie's Dance on Friday, March 6, from 6:30-10pm in Mt. Pleasant's Multipurpose Room. Tickets will be sold at break and lunch the two weeks before the dance for $3 the entire week before, $4 the week of the dance, and $5 at the door. The dance is Oldies themed, so come wearing those leather jackets and poodle skirts! (think Grease) Snacks, drinks, and glow sticks will be sold at the dance. Sadie's means girls ask boys, but you don't need a date to go and have fun! Doors will close at 7:00. See you there!

Goodwill Fundraiser - May 16

The date for our next Goodwill Fundraiser will be Saturday, May 16 from 10am-3:30pm in the Tahoma front turnaround located at 14271 Story Road. Please start saving all your items and bring them so that we can fill up the trailer. We are paid by how much we donate, so we need everyone's help!

For those who have items to donate and cannot wait until May 16th, you can bring them to the Goodwill Corporate office in San Jose - they will weigh your donation and give Summit Credit.  Contact Crystal Speed and she can put you in touch with her contact at Goodwill.

The other option is to bring them to the school and drop the items in the Goodwill barrels by the office. Goodwill will pick up the barrels once full.

Please spread the word (post in your own Facebook wall, Nextdoor.com, tell your neighbors, families, friends). We need to fill the truck as much as we can. The goal is to earn the maximum $1,400 donation.

Junior/Senior Prom - May 30

The committee is working on plans for the Junior/Senior Prom which will be held Saturday, May 30 at the Tech Museum. Theme and other logistics are being discussed.

Global Glimpse - Fundraising Campaign - Please help
Ms. Goddard

This summer, 14 Rainier students will be traveling with Global Glimpse to Nicaragua on a leadership development trip. Few young people are given the opportunity to travel internationally, and even fewer to travel in a way that challenges their perspectives on the world and empowers them to be become globally competent leaders. This summer with be their chance to learn more about the world and what making change and leading will look like in their lifetime.

These students have worked incredibly hard to be accepted to this program, and they are working even harder to raise funds, learn about Nicaragua, and begin conversations around global issues.

Please help support these students in their fundraising efforts. Our goal is to raise $5000 to divide among the students based on need, and to make their dream of traveling and learning together a reality! Donate on their GoFundMe page.
Students Rising Above - Due Apr. 4
William Teav, 12th grader

I want to share an opportunity for juniors to apply to a scholarship program that provides mentoring for senior year of high school and for all four years of college. I applied and got accepted into this program last year.

Students Rising Above's comprehensive program provides college readiness workshops, academic support, mentoring, financial assistance and literacy, healthcare, career guidance, internships and job placement, community networking, and leadership development. 90% of SRA students GRADUATE from college within 4.5 years.

They are looking for high school juniors who have shown great courage and depth of character in overcoming obstacles not of their own making. Their students desire to go to college and believe that education is their best chance for a better life. Students have maintained a GPA of 3.0 or higher throughout high school, and come highly recommended by a teacher or counselor.

The funds can be used for tuition, housing, transportation costs, books and supplies, and monthly living stipends. Students are also provided with a new laptop computer to assist in the academic transition to college.

To find out more information and to apply, please visit the Students Rising Above website or contact William Teav.

Summit's mission is to prepare a diverse student population for success in a 4-year university
and to be thoughtful, contributing members of society.
