Message from the Director of Expeditions
We started our third round of Expeditions at Rainier this week. We are excited to have our talented Expeditions teachers on campus while the academic teachers participate in valuable professional development training.
Students in Dance and Drama are working on the stage at the Mexican Heritage Center. Students in selected classes are are participating in field trips. Art classes are creating some incredible pieces of work.
The Creative Writing class is spending time on revisions of their projects. Louis Duran spent Tuesday morning on goal setting, getting help from classmates and analyzing the tone of two videos. Sandra Ortmann spent her time "understanding what I need to do" to get two specific parts of her grade up in the class according to the rubric, and then getting it done. Students are really working HARD during this session of Expeditions.
If you have any questions or concerns about the Expeditions classes, please feel free to reach out to me at gponikvar@summitps.org

Message from the Directors
Dear Rainier Families, Summit Public Schools is excited to launch a cell phone text messaging service to send parents key information and announcements. Based on our parent survey results, half of our parents would like to receive information from the school via cell phone texts so we are happy to provide this service. To get started, text the word "Join" to the number 56360. You should receive a confirmation message from our messaging system (Synervoice). Create a contact on your phone with Rainier and the phone number 56360. Then when you receive a text from this number, you know who is sending it. If we do not have your cell phone number, you will get a message saying: "Request not processed." If you receive this message, please contact us. Please email or call our Office Manager, Lupe Trujillo at (408) 831-3104 to provide your cell phone number.
Rest assured that we will be mindful of the number of text messages we send you. We will send you text messages if your student has an unexcused absence or tardy as well as tell you about key announcements and upcoming events. At any time, you can unsubscribe by texting "Stop" to 56360. Please note that standard text message charges may apply, depending on your text message plan. If you have an unlimited text messaging plan, there would be no additional charge.
After we have a critical mass of parents opted in, we will begin using the service. Respectfully,Jesse Roe, Executive Director Kevin Bock, Assistant Director |
We Want Your Feedback! Parent Focus Groups
Join other Rainier parents and Summit's Director of Family Engagement in an annual focus group. The dates are Friday 2/6, Tuesday, 2/10, and Tuesday 2/24. The focus group will cover topics on student, parent, and prospective family experiences as well as include feedback on Summit Rainier's LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan). The LCAP is a part of California's K-12 education funding process that guides school decisions. The focus group will provide you an opportunity to give feedback and input on the school that wasn't captured in the parent survey.
If you would like to participate, please fill out this form with your availability.

Scholarships
Seniors, if you are done with college applications, the next thing on your list is to apply for scholarships. It is important to check the eligibility criteria and make sure you fit the profile, keep the due date in mind and complete the requirements for the application. We have a list of scholarship opportunities on the Scholarship Task Card. Younger students and families can also take a preview look at the list to see what they may qualify for and can work towards next year.

Recruitment Open House - for Fall 2015 - February 5
Do you know a family who might be interested in joining Summit San Jose next fall? Please encourage them to attend a Recruitment Open House event to find out more about Rainier or Tahoma. The next event will be held on Thursday, February 5 at the Rainier campus at 6:30pm. They will also be able to find out more about Future Student Shadow Days and tours for Future Parents. Applications are being taken online - please visit: http://summitps.org/apply to learn more. Siblings of currently enrolled students need to submit an application, they are not automatically enrolled. |
Transfer Process - First Lottery - February 20
With the upcoming move of Tahoma (to the Oak Grove High School campus in South San Jose), we wanted to take an opportunity to be very clear about the transfer process between Tahoma and Rainier. While we hope that all students stay with their mentor and friends at their current school, we understand that transportation may be a problem and that there are some families that are considering transferring between schools. Both schools have the same transfer process which can be found at rainier.summitps.org/admissions. The first transfer lottery is on February 20 but the sooner you fill out your transfer application, the better both schools can plan for next year.
