Message from the Directors
Dear Rainier Families,
Since we opened in 2011, our vision has always been to find a long-term home for Summit Rainier that would allow us to grow, thrive and be a strong community. We are excited and committed to make our current campus our long-term home and one we can all be proud to call Summit Rainier.
With the help of many of you, we have already made significant progress in improving our campus. Because of new statewide regulations that Summit helped pass, we now have an opportunity to renovate and beautify our facility in a way never available to us before. We will be investing in renovations and enhancements this year and every year going forward to create the long-term home we always imagined. To partner with us in imagining and renovating our campus, we will be forming a Parent and Student Advisory Committee. We hope you will join our team so that our campus reflects our community's collective voices, values, and ideals.
We also want to keep you informed about Summit Tahoma's long-term facility search. While Summit Rainier and Tahoma both started on the National Hispanic University (NHU) campus, Tahoma will no longer be able to remain there. We aggressively negotiated with NHU on a long-term lease, but NHU will be bringing a fourth charter on to its campus and we will not be able to stay.
Over the last four years, we have been exhaustively pursuing any and all pathways towards long-term facilities for both Summit Rainier and Tahoma. We worked intensively with half a dozen real estate brokers and developers to explore all privately leased facility options in East San Jose, but, unfortunately, we were not able to find one that we could sustainably afford on traditional public school funding. We also pushed the East Side Union High School District to meet the letter of the law and offer our schools the facilities that all public school students deserve. In late September, the District performed a study on the availability of district space and recently told us that there is only one viable option, on the Oak Grove High School campus (285 Blossom Hill Rd, San Jose, CA 95123). From a real lack of available options, we have been forced to make a hard choice. Summit Tahoma will move to Oak Grove starting in fall 2015.
We understand that this is a lot of information to process and that you may have questions. Please e-mail or call either of us if you want to talk about this more. You can reach Jesse at jroe@summitps.org and (408) 601-0596, or reach Kevin at kbock@summitps.org and (630) 217-2163. Please also feel free to make an appointment to come by our office.
At the forefront of any choice we make is our steadfast commitment to our students and our mission to create high-performing schools, where students from diverse backgrounds can prepare for success in college together, that are small and safe, and sustainable on the limited public school funding we receive from the state. We deeply believe that our campus and Tahoma's new home at Oak Grove will offer our schools the opportunities to both continue to deliver on our mission and build the long-term homes we always envisioned.
Sincerely,
Jesse Roe, Executive Director
Kevin Bock, Assistant Director

PSCG - Parents and Students for a Common Goal
Everyone is invited to join the parent and student leadership team, PSCG, or Parents and Students for a Common Goal. It's a great way to earn your volunteer hours and contribute to the Summit Rainier community. Students, under the leadership of Ms. Goddard are leading the Recruitment, Sports & Clubs, and Events Committees, while parents are taking the lead on the Communications, Volunteers and Fundraising committees. We are actively seeking parent and student volunteers to participate on all of these committees.
PSCG meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm on the Rainier campus. PSCG meeting dates are November 5, December 3, January 14, February 4, March 4, April 1 and May 6. We hope that you will join us!
For more information, and to see how you can help, please see this handout. Questions, please contact Julie Ramirez or Sylvia Pardini.
