Please make sure to call the office at (408) 831-3104 and leave a message on the attendance line if your student is out sick.

Students need to arrive at school with enough time to pick up their laptops and report to class by 9am. Please help us make sure that students arrive on time.

Rainier's First Graduating Class
Planning has started for our very first graduation to be held this coming June. We are looking for venue suggestions - it needs to be able to accommodate our 135 Rainier and Tahoma seniors, plus seating for 30 staff and 850 guests. Please send suggestions to Helen Sironen at hsironen@me.com by October 24.

College Applications

The Class of 2015 marked an important milestone this past week when they began to submit their first applications to college! These applications are the culmination of lots of hard work over the past several months as the seniors have taken SAT and ACT exams, researched schools and refined their college lists, and worked on their personal statements. Our 12th grade mentors have also been working extremely hard to guide them through the process and answer all of their questions. We are so proud that they have reached this milestone, and we look forward to celebrating all of the applications that they will submit over the next couple of months.

With application season underway, college is an even more visible presence on our campus than usual for all of the grade levels, not just 12th grade. Over 75 students and parents from every grade level at Tahoma and Rainier came out for last week's Financial Aid Night event. If you could not attend the event, you can still review the presentations on the Summit College Readiness website
Financial Aid Workshop

PSAT Test
This weekend, about 175 10th and 11th grade students from Rainier and Tahoma will be taking the PSAT to help them practice and prepare for their college entrance exams. It is truly inspiring to see our students making these steps toward their college goals.

Here is a list of questions you might want to consider asking the representatives. Additional college visits have been scheduled for October and November. A list is available on your Naviance account.

Rainier Interact Club has a Sponsor!

Interact is a club for young people ages 12-18 who want to join together to tackle the issues in their community that they care most about. Through Interact, members carry out hands-on service projects, make international connections, develop leadership skills and meet a lot of people!

John, Nate and Mr. Emmanuele, President of Milpitas Rotary

John Gundayao and Nate Tibbils, Co-Presidents of Summit Rainier Interact, were invited by Eric Emmanuele, Milpitas Rotary Club President, to make a case for sponsorship at the club's weekly Monday lunch meeting. After John and Nate's professional and heartfelt presentation, a Milpitas Rotary Club member made the motion for Milpitas Rotary to officially sponsor Summit Rainier Interact, which was seconded and the remaining membership voted to seal the deal!

Sponsorship by a Rotary Club allows Interact officers and members to attend leadership trainings such as Camp RYLA, provides opportunities to serve in the local community and gain access to valuable mentorship and support.

Rainier's Interact Club is part of District 5170 - Area 6, which is the largest District in the world. Other schools in Area 6 include Mt. Pleasant, James Lick, Piedmont Hills and Independence High School. Our Interact has 18 members and the current officers are:

John Gundayao - Co-President

Nate Tibbils - Co-President

Amanda Ramirez - Secretary

Monserrat Rodriguez - Events Coordinator

Arran Robinson - Publicist

Interact meets every Monday at lunch in Mr. Avarca's room 1220.

Loaves & Fishes
This Family Kitchen is looking for volunteers to help as a "regular" or one-time basis. They serve 1,000 no cost hot, nutritious meals a day. Please visit the Loaves & Fishes website.
College Events in the Community

San Jose State University is hosting a free Family & Community Conference for Santa Clara County students on Saturday, November 1. State and private universities will be there for a college fair. The intended audience for this event includes elementary, middle and high school students and their families. Students and families can learn about how to prepare and apply for college, how to pay for it, the Dream Act, and careers and educational pathways public and private universities have to offer. Seniors can get help on their CSU & UC applications and review their personal statements with a college access expert. Computer labs will be available on site for students to work on applications.

Information at the conference will be available in Spanish, Vietnamese and English. El contenido de los talleres de la conferencia se ofrecen en español, vietnamita e inglés. Chương trình được trình bày bằng tiếng Anh, Việt và Tây Ban Nha.

Registration is required by October 24
