Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

In college, office hours are a time for students to meet with their professor/teacher, get individual support, and ask for feedback. Knowing who to ask and how to ask for help will be vital for college success. At Summit, we also hold office hours. During office hours, students can connect with their teachers to get the extra support that they need. They can go over receive feedback on projects, take content assessments, or practice skills with their teacher. It's a safe place for students to work and use in whatever way makes the most sense to them.

Goodwill Collection Event

Crystal Speed

Thank you to everyone who cleaned out their closets, garages and storage areas this past Saturday and took the time to haul everything over to school! Together with Tahoma, we held another successful Goodwill Collections Event to help raise money for our schools. We did at least equal to what we did this past spring - possibly more!  So hopefully, we were able to raise another $1,500! As soon as we get the final tally from Goodwill in a few weeks, we'll let everyone know! Thanks again! This is such a great and easy fundraiser - look forward to this being a continuing event for us!

Day in the Park

Summit Rainier is participating in the "Day in the Park" event on Saturday, October 11, 2014, 10am - 3pm, at Lake Cunningham Regional Park, 2305 S. White Rd., San Jose.

The "Day in the Park" event has become a signature community event, bringing the community together in celebration of our rich and diverse heritage through live cultural entertainment, interactive children's activities and enticing ethnic food trucks with a free BBQ.

This event is a perfect place for us to let the community know of our wonderful school, where they can gain information/knowledge of what Summit Rainier can offer the local community.

Parents, students, if you can help us by staffing the table, even for an hour or two, please contact Crystal Speed or Helen Sironen.

Global Glimpse
Ms. Goddard
Dear 11th Grade Students and Families,

We are excited to tell you about a unique and rewarding summer experience through Global Glimpse.

Global Glimpse is a non-profit organization that sends rising seniors to Spanish-speaking countries on service learning trips. Students study issues such as culture, politics, poverty, economic development, and Latin American history all within the context of living and working like a local. It's a life-changing experience that will resonate with them and give them a "glimpse" into the world and its beauty, interconnectedness, and struggles. We are super excited to be working with our students on this mission.

This summer, Rainier and Tahoma will be working with 20 rising seniors to develop leadership skills, practice service learning, and learn about the culture in NICARAGUA!!

Interested students should attend an information session on Tuesday, October 7 at lunch in room 1218 or Wednesday, October 8 after school in room 1218We will go over more about Global Glimpse, the application process/after school workshops, and the summer trip.  Attending one of the information sessions is mandatory if students are interested in applying. Scholarships are available!!

After the information session, students and their parents will need to attend a parent information night on Tuesday, October 14 at 6:30pm in the Tahoma auditorium. At that session, representatives from Global Glimpse will review the program and the application process and answer questions. At this meeting, students will be given access to the application process.

In the meantime, to learn more about the trip and what the program involves, please explore the Global Glimpse Website, check out this calendar of important dates for the fall! Please reach out to Ms. Goddard if you have any questions!

Sacred Heart Community Services
John Gundayao

Parents, students, teachers, and anyone who is a resident of the Bay Area.
Many of you know about the massive price increases in housing and rental prices and how difficult it has become to afford housing within the last few years. There is a major housing shortage in all parts of the region and as a result, many families less fortunate are being forced to move far away from work or onto the streets (the number of homelessness has increased significantly even as the economy recovered). For the last few months, I have been working with Sacred Heart Community Services to help pass a city measure to fund affordable housing. But we need your support to tell the San Jose City Council why they need to pass this measure. Please e-mail me at jgundayao.ra@mysummitps.org for more information on what you can do. Thank you.
Science Camp Cabin Leaders Needed

YMCA Camp Campbell is looking for high school sophomores and above to volunteer as cabin leaders for science camp.

Volunteers: Develop and improve your own leadership skills by helping young students become environmentally aware individuals. Volunteer as a cabin leader to assist our teachers in educating 5th and 6th grade students about outdoor science.

For more information visit YMCA website.
