Request for Empty 2 liter Soda Bottles

Ms. Shemyakina

AP Environmental Studies Teacher

Our second APES project has to do with building ecosystems within plastic bottles. We need as many 2 liter soda bottles as we can get. We need 130 and only have about 20 so far. Thanks to families who have sent in bottles this week.

Here is an image of the PERFECT soda bottle:

Some details:

  • Clear plastic (green does not work)
  • "Flat" sides (the curvy new Coke bottles do not work as well)
  • Gently rinsed out with water please! (dried soda is hard to clean out)
  • With caps if possible (but not required)

Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

Thank you to all of you who came in for the annual PLP family meeting this past week. We truly treasure this time that we get to spend with each individual student and his/her family, and we appreciate you all taking the time out of your busy schedules to make it happen. Remember that you can log onto the  PLP tool to explore the College and Goals tabs and review what you discussed with your student's mentor at the meeting. Also, if you didn't get a chance to take the parent survey while you were on campus, please take a few minutes to do so now.

We are in our second week of Expeditions. Holocaust survivor, Anne Marie Yellin guest lectured in both Holocaust class and Sociology of Law. In Holocaust class, Anne Marie shared her experience being a hidden child in a Catholic Convent at the age of nine. Students asked compelling and thoughtful questions and Anne Marie was truly touched by the positive attitudes of our Rainier students. In Sociology of Law  Anne Marie shared her experience of becoming an American Citizen and some of the hardships she faced in the Bay Area.

Students in the Drama class were given scripts with most of the lines removed. All of the groups were given the same scenes to start with and they had to a) write the remaining lines b) come up with an original plot line based off of the added lines they created and c) come up with a character with 3 distinctive characteristics they can portray fully in the short scene. Groups worked on blocking and developing their scenes and the final products will be amazing!

Sincerely,

Jesse Roe, Executive Director

Kevin Bock, Assistant Director

Day in the Park

Summit Rainier is participating in the "Day in the Park" event on Saturday, October 11, 2014, 10am - 3pm, at Lake Cunningham Regional Park, 2305 S. White Rd., San Jose.

The "Day in the Park" event has become a signature community event, bringing the community together in celebration of our rich and diverse heritage through live cultural entertainment, interactive children's activities and enticing ethnic food trucks with a free BBQ.

This event is a perfect place for us to let the community know of our wonderful school, where they can gain information/knowledge of what Summit Rainier can offer the local community.

Parents, students, if you can help us by staffing the table, even for an hour or two, please contact Crystal Speed at crystal.b.speed@gmail.com or Helen Sironen at hsironen@sbcglobal.net

PSCG  - Students Lead the Way; Parent Help Needed
Sylvia Pardini and Julie Ramirez

The Summit Rainier Student Council, under the guidance of Katie Goddard, 9th grade Teacher and Advisor to Rainier's Student Council, has been meeting every Thursday at lunch and has put together a comprehensive plan. Some initiatives are immediate, meaning between now and December, while others are looking beyond December due to timing and urgency of the logistics associated with those events (Prom, Graduation, etc.). Most important: the plan encompasses our students' vision and once you review the list and priorities set, you will agree it is quite impressive.

As mentioned previously, the Rainier student population is an integral part of Parents & Students working towards a Common Goal (PSCG). Student Council is open to every student regardless if Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior or Senior. PSCG has five committees, while Student Council focuses on three areas: Events, Sports & Clubs and Recruitment. Both Student Council and PSCG are looking for parents that are committed to building a student-led environment and have a great track record of follow through. Now that the students have outlined their goals and laid out plans, we ask our parents to identify what you are really passionate about and sign up as a contact person/advisor in one of the following areas by emailing Sylvia PardiniJulie Ramirez, or Katie Goddard:

  • EVENTS: Halloween Movie Night - Winter Formal - Spring Dance - Friday Fun - Spirit Weeks - Prom - Graduation
  • SPORTS & CLUBS: Club Fair II - Club Leadership Training - Club Promotion Newsletter - Sport Promotion: Rallies & Advertising - Club & Sport Participation Focus Group
  • RECRUITMENT: Shadowing Program - New Student Program - Training for Recruitent, Open House, etc. - Student Email Initiative

We thank everyone for their patience in working through our the process of building a strong student-led initiative. The process is time consuming and we would like to commend Miss Goddard for taking on the task of being the positive and driving force behind Rainier's Student Council. It takes time because the students are in many instances working on something they have never worked on and are experiencing a learning curve, developing skills that are perhaps new, yet essential for the rest of their lives. We as PSCG look forward to lending our support in any way we can.

The next PSCG meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 6:30pm. Student council representatives will be at the meeting to discuss progress and where assistance is needed. ALL parents and students are welcome to attend. Future meetings are scheduled for November 6, December 4 and January 8.
