Request for Empty 2 liter Soda Bottles

Ms. Shemyakina

AP Environmental Studies Teacher

Our second APES project has to do with building ecosystems within plastic bottles. We need as many 2 liter soda bottles as we can get by Friday, September 12.

Here is an image of the PERFECT soda bottle:

Some details:

  • Clear plastic (green does not work)
  • "Flat" sides (the curvy new Coke bottles do not work as well)
  • Gently rinsed out with water please! (dried soda is hard to clean out)
  • With caps if possible (but not required)

Message from the Directors

Dear Bulldog Families,

We are excited to announce that we have had more than ten students join our community in the past three weeks! The most important consequence here is that these students will now have the benefit of a world class education and supportive relationships with our amazing faculty here are Rainier. This also earns us a donation of $20,000 to help us implement some of the orientation projects that your students did earlier in the year.  We will start that process during Expeditions and put student in the role of project management to help build their skills! If your child has an idea that they are particularly passionate about, encourage them to reach out to their teachers individually and advocate for their campus improvement.

We also wanted to remind you about three important parent and student support structures we have coming up. First of all, today is our first Teaching and Learning tour. This event is focused on our classroom instruction and allows you to visit classrooms with Mr. Roe and ask questions about anything you saw. We will start in the office at 3pm. Next, Back to School Night Part 2 is tomorrow evening at 6:30 pm. BTSN1 was focused on getting to know the school and your student's mentor. BTSN2 covers our academic program in more depth and will help you understand how to support your student. Next Friday and Saturday are our PLP Family Goals meetings. These meetings between families, student, and mentor are essential for helping students set goals that will lead them to being successful here at Rainier and in college. Your student's mentor should have reached out to you to schedule this meeting. If you have not scheduled a meeting, please reach out to your child's mentor this week. Faculty emails can be found on this page.

Our students and parents had a great time on the camping trip and the students and teachers are extremely grateful to the volunteers who drove students and cooked meals. Thank you very much, we could not have made the trip happen without you. Despite the being tired from activity and lack of sleep, many students and teachers have reported that the trip left them refreshed and excited to get back into the classroom. Our next big off campus event is our study trips in the Spring, be on the look out for information about that and a request for more parent volunteers.

If you have driven past the campus recently, you may have seen that the four portables in the front have been taken down. We are hopeful that the remaining construction work to improve our campus will be completed in the near future.

Sincerely,

Jesse Roe, Executive Director

PSCG - Parents and Students for a Common Goal

Dear Summit Rainier Community!

It was great to see everyone at the PSCG meeting - we are immensely impressed by the number of students at the meeting! Attendance was split almost 50/50 between parents and students. What a wonderful testament to our dedicated student population and your desire to build 'your' school.

PSCG has five committees that are looking for active student and parent input and participation. There are a couple of spots open which we would love to see filled. We would like to introduce the committees and respective chairs. Please extend a warm welcome to our team!

The next PSCG meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 2 at 6:30pm. The individual committees are utilizing the next few weeks to define their short term goals between now and December. Their meeting times will be published soon - please consider joining one of these committees and/or reach out to the respective chairs (parent or student).

PSAT Testing - 11th and 10th Graders

Mr. Bock, Assistant Director

The Preliminary SAT or PSAT will be offered at one of our Summit San Jose campuses this year on Saturday, October 18. This is an important exam opportunity for 10th and 11th grade students. This exam serves the following three purposes:

  • A very high score (top 1 - 3% nationally) can bring scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Organization, colleges, corporations, and other institutions for any 11th grade student
  • The National Merit organization has a separate scholarship program for any 11th grade student who identifies as "Black" or "Hispanic" (these are the words the organization uses) and who also scores well on the exam
  • Any score can help a 10th or 11th grade student understand if the SAT might be a better match college entrance exam as compared to the ACT. (In general, the ACT aligns better with college-ready skills and curriculum than the SAT, but for some students the SAT is still the stronger test.)
We encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity. The exam costs $14. Students can pay with cash or check. Students who are on scholarship will have support to pay for the cost of the exam. You can find more information about the PSAT exam, including other local high schools who offer the PSAT, on the College Board website.

Students who want to register to take the exam with Summit need to talk directly to Mr. Bock by the end of the day on Friday, September 19.

Another (free!) opportunity to take the PSAT is being offered by the San Jose Public Libraries and Kaplan. Participants must contact the branch to receive the registration code to participate. Click here for more information: Kaplan SAT Practice Exam
Interact Club Help Needed

Interact Club is looking for drivers who can take us to events after-school such as bowling, the movies, fundraisers, etc. If you're able to help, please e-mail Amanda Ramirez at aramirez.ra@mysummitps.org. We especially encourage parents whose kids are in Interact to become drivers for us.

Also, we're looking for cardboard boxes (preferably white or tan), duct tape, hot glue guns (we can return them), construction paper in white, light blue and black, and rope. If you can help by donating items by Wednesday September 17, please contact John Gundayao. An online sign up list can be found here. Drop off items in Mr. Avarca's room, 1220.
Breakthrough Silicon Valley

Breakthrough Silicon Valley is looking for Juniors and Seniors to be part of their after school math program. High school and college students teach their own classes of middle school students. Class sizes are small, with less than 10 students per room, and each teacher receives intensive training, individualized support and lesson materials from experienced BSV staff members.

As an after-school math teacher, you will lead students in number talks, critical thinking word problems, and Khan Academy practice, as well as support the implementation of our "Student Success Skills" program with the training and supervision of Breakthrough's staff members.

More information at their website: Breakthrough Silicon Valley. You can also speak to Mr. Avarca if you are interested or have questions about the program.
CodeNow
