Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

Mr. Bock and I have been have been looking over students' orientation projects and have been inspired by all of the great ideas from our students. This not only gave us a good impression of the skills that the students have, but also helped us learn about each individual student by seeing which recommendations they made.

We are also excited to announce that we are very close to reaching our first goal of enrolling 10 new Rainier Bulldogs! There are a few friends who are planning to tour Rainier on Wednesday and hopefully they will join our community and get us above 10. This would gain us a $20,000 donation to implement some of the amazing orientation projects that our students have created. To help get us to our next 10 students and receive an even bigger donation, we are holding a Recruitment Open House at Tahoma tonight at 6:30pm! Tell your friends and family to come along if they want to hear more about Summit before joining our community.

We are hoping that the excitement started by our orientation projects and new bulldogs joining our community will continue with our 4th annual camping trip Thursday and Friday. However, at the moment we need more drivers to drive about 50 more students and we can't go unless we have room for everyone since we will leave no bulldog behind! Please, if you can help drive students, even if it is just one direction, call us at the office to volunteer.

Sincerely,

Jesse Roe, Executive Director

4th Annual Summit Rainier Camping Trip

We are excited for the 4th annual Summit Rainier Camping Trip this Thursday and Friday! This important Summit tradition helps students bond with their classmates and teachers and form relationships that are the foundation of both the personal and academic support that students will receive this year at Summit Rainier! We expect all students to attend the camping trip.

Volunteers:
We are so grateful to the many families who are contributing to our school by volunteering to chaperone or drive for our camping trip. We still need drivers for Thursday, Friday or both. Please contact Patti Hares if you can help. Driver forms are available in the office and need to be completed before the trip.

Donations:
Donations are very much needed to cover the cost of the trip. A suggested donation of $25 per student is requested. Donations may be brought into the office or paid online https://system.netsuite.com/pages/login.jsp

UC Course Approvals

Mr. Roe, Executive Director

Rainier and Tahoma have received full approval for all academic courses to ensure that all graduates meet A-G requirements.  Due to our rigorous courses, this was just a formality but we wanted to keep the community updated that all A-G courses are approved.  We are waiting final approval on a few Expeditions courses but those should be coming shortly.
Request for Empty 2 liter Soda Bottles

Ms. Shemyakina

AP Environmental Studies Teacher

Our second APES project has to do with building ecosystems within plastic bottles. We need as many 2 liter soda bottles as we can get by Friday, September 12.

Here is an image of the PERFECT soda bottle:

Some details:

  • Clear plastic (green does not work)
  • "Flat" sides (the curvy new Coke bottles do not work as well)
  • Gently rinsed out with water please! (dried soda is hard to clean out)
  • With caps if possible (but not required)
PSAT Testing - 11th and 10th Graders

Mr. Bock, Assistant Director

The Preliminary SAT or PSAT will be offered at one of our Summit San Jose campuses this year on Saturday, October 18. This is an important exam opportunity for 10th and 11th grade students. This exam serves the following three purposes:

  • A very high score (top 1 - 3% nationally) can bring scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Organization, colleges, corporations, and other institutions for any 11th grade student
  • The National Merit organization has a separate scholarship program for any 11th grade student who identifies as "Black" or "Hispanic" (these are the words the organization uses) and who also scores well on the exam
  • Any score can help a 10th or 11th grade student understand if the SAT might be a better match college entrance exam as compared to the ACT. (In general, the ACT aligns better with college-ready skills and curriculum than the SAT, but for some students the SAT is still the stronger test.)
We encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity. The exam costs $14, and students can pay with cash or check. Students who are on scholarship will have support to pay for the cost of the exam. You can find more information about the PSAT exam, including other local high schools who offer the PSAT, on the College Board website.

Students who want to register to take the exam with Summit need to talk directly to Mr. Bock by the end of the day on Friday, September 19.
