Message from the Directors
Dear Rainier Community,
The start of the 2014-2015 school year is finally here! We were extremely excited to welcome all of our students back to school today. This year is extra special because we have 12th grade students for the first time, and they will become the first graduating class at Rainier. It's going to be an amazing year!
We are looking forward to seeing parents and guardians at Back to School Night this Thursday, August 21 at 6:30pm. Please join us for this important event. We want to make sure that you have the opportunity to meet your student's teachers and start to develop a connection with your student's mentor.
This week, all students are engaging in a variety of orientation activities, including community building, college planning, and pre-assessments for math, English, and Spanish. If you would like to see more details, please check out the student orientation website. You click on your student's grade level to see a detailed schedule for each day. Additionally, we will be sending out a brief recap of the day in a Summit Insider email for the next two weeks. Respectfully, Jesse Roe, Executive Director
Kevin Bock, Assistant Director

Construction Update
As we mentioned in a previous update, our construction schedule has extended into the school year. The East Side Union High School District has written an update that gives a timeline of the project with the dates when everything will be finished. Please see this letter if you would like more details.

Uniform Recycling
We are accepting used polo shirts in the office for students not meeting dress code standards. As a reminder, the Rainier and Tahoma faculties have agreed to change from a uniform policy to a dress code. We decided to keep the dress code as simple as possible and have it based on two main principles of safety and appropriateness.
Clothing & accessories need to be safe
*No solid red or blue (pants, shirts, shoes or hats)
Except: Blue jeans are OK. Solid red and blue OK on college gear
*No Sharks, Raiders, 49ers, or Cowboys logos
*No references to drugs, alcohol, sex, profanity, gangs or violence
Clothing & accessories need to be school appropriate
*Clothing must thoroughly cover stomach, chest, and back.
Straps should be at least 2 fingers wide.
*Shorts and skirts must go past fingertips
Any holes in pants must be below fingertips and cover undergarments
*No exposed undergarments (underwear, bra, boxers)
One clarification, no solid red or blue means that each article of clothing should be less than 50% red or blue.
Students may continue to wear the uniform if they choose, or you can donate your extra polo shirts to the office. We will be using old Summit San Jose polo shirts to help dress the students who do not come to school following our dress code.

Rising 12th grade Bulldogs, it's time to start taking those fancy senior portraits for the 2014-2015 yearbook! We are working with Pro Image Studios in San Jose. Just go to www.proimagestudio.com and select "Schedule Senior Portrait Appointment" from the top menu, then select the San Jose studio. If you have any questions, call Pro Image at 408-269-3677. All senior portraits must be taken by November 8, 2014. Also, there is a no cost "Yearbook Only" option for families who do not want to purchase a portrait package.
ACT and SAT Testing
If you aren't satisfied with your test results, you can retake these exams in the fall before submitting your college applications. We recommend taking the exams at least twice. You can register for the fall exams at www.act.org and www.collegeboard.org.
Upcoming Fall Testing Dates:
ACT
September 13, 2014 (register August 9-22, late fee required)
October 25, 2014 (register by September 19)
SAT
October 11, 2014 (register by September 12)
November 8, 2014 (register by October 9)
College Applications
Applications are now available online for the University of California (UC) system as well as the Common Application which is the form used by many private schools. Start reviewing what items you'll need to complete them. UC Applications can be submitted during the month of November, but you'll definitely want to start early.
Note: CSU applications will be available online October 1.

We have started to schedule our college representative visits for the school year:
-
September 16, Santa Clara University, 4pm at Tahoma
-
October 20, Rochester Institute of Technology, 4pm at Rainier
-
October 28, Pepperdine University, 4pm at Tahoma
This is a great opportunity to talk to colleges about their school and ask questions. Talking to representatives can give you a better idea about their offerings and what might help you get into their school.
More visits will be scheduled soon, so stay tuned!
