Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Community,

We can't wait for you to come back! We have loved greeting smiling faces coming to turn in forms, but the building is too quiet without you.

As August rolls along and you start thinking about coming back to school, we wanted to preview what the first week will look like for the students. As we do every year, we begin the year with a thoughtfully designed orientation for all students. This year, we are excited to integrate our new students with our returning students to build community and get ready for classes as a whole school. Over the course of the week, students will:

  • Meet with their mentor and have time to connect as a community group on Monday, August 18.

  • Start previewing the year and thinking about goals and the Personalized Learning Plan.

  • Learn about the year's expectations in terms of college applications and grades.

  • Practice effective student behaviors as we get back into school mode from the summer.

  • Take some tests that will help us understand the level and needs of each student.

  • Hear about ways to get more involved in school activities and leadership.

  • Receive their regular schedule for the rest of the school year on Friday, August 22.

We are very excited to start the year by making sure that every student understands what they need to be doing and is set up for success. Please help your student prepare for this week by:

  • Starting to adjust their sleeping schedule to make it easier to wake up early

  • Getting very basic materials like a notebook and a pencil

  • Arranging lunch everyday (plan to bring it or buy it at school)

  • Making a plan to get to Rainier around 8:45am everyday (school starts promptly at 9am)

  • Bringing or sending all of forms in to the front desk (if you don't have them, call or come by the school)

Because we know that you like to stay informed, we will be sending home a brief email after each day of this first week of student orientation to share the activities that your students engaged in that day and the information that was shared.

If you have any questions, please, let us know!

Best,

Jesse Roe, Executive Director

Kevin Bock, Assistant Director

Website Announcement

In an effort to keep all communication streamlined and easy to find, we have developed rainier.summitps.org as a hub for all of the information you might need. The site will be updated frequently so check back weekly or whenever you are in search of new information. The calendar page will have up-to-date information about all Rainier events. If you would like to recommend features for the website or get events added to the calendar, please reach out to Mr. Roe at jroe@summitps.org

Go now and check out our announcement about our amazing 2014 - 2015 Rainier faculty!

Campus Work Day - Saturday, August 16, 10am-2pm

This is our school, and we love it and care for it. Join Rainier faculty this Saturday to help prepare our campus for the start of school. Students, families and friends are all invited from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, August 16th. All helpers will be treated to pizza lunch! We'll be arranging classrooms, tidying the grounds and cleaning up to make sure that our students have an inviting, safe and welcoming campus to return to. As a reminder, the construction at Rainier's campus will be wrapping up in mid-September, so stay tuned for a grand campus celebration once the construction is complete!

Coach J Bumagat, Athletic Director

We are in urgent need of coaches! We are looking for volleyball, cross country and cheer coaches. If you are interested or know anyone who is, please contact me as soon as possible. I can be reached at 408-688-1995 or coachjbumagat@gmail.com

Fall sports practices will begin on August 18 instead of August 11. Students who have signed up will receive an email from me with the details. Please be on the lookout for my email and check your spam folder as well.

Recruitment

We still have openings in next year's incoming 9th grade class and limited space for transferring 10th, 11th and 12th graders. If you have friends, family members, co-workers, etc. who have children who will be in high school in the fall, please be sure to direct them to the Summit San Jose website

12th Grade Reminders

Senior Class Portraits

Rising 12th grade Bulldogs, it's time to start taking those fancy senior portraits for the 2014-2015 yearbook! We are working with Pro Image Studios in San Jose. Just go to www.proimagestudio.com and select "Schedule Senior Portrait Appointment" from the top menu, then select the San Jose studio. If you have any questions, call Pro Image at 408-269-3677. All senior portraits must be taken by November 8, 2014. Also, there is a no cost "Yearbook Only" option for families who do not want to purchase a portrait package.

ACT and SAT Testing

If you aren't satisfied with your test results, you can retake these exams in the fall before submitting your college applications. We recommend taking the exams at least twice. You can register for the fall exams at www.act.org and  www.collegeboard.org.

Upcoming Fall Testing Dates:

ACT

September 13, 2014 (register August 9-22, late fee required)

October 25, 2014 (register by September 19)

SAT

October 11, 2014 (register by September 12)

November 8, 2014  (register by October 9)

College Applications

Applications are now available online for the University of California (UC) system as well as the Common Application which is the form used by many private schools. Start reviewing what items you'll need to complete them. UC Applications can be submitted during the month of November, but you'll definitely want to start early.

Note: CSU applications will be available online October 1.

College Visits

We have started to schedule our college representative visits for the school year:

  • September 16th, Santa Clara University, 4pm at Tahoma

  • October 20th, Rochester Institute of Technology, 4pm at Rainier

  • October 28th, Pepperdine University, 4pm at Tahoma

This is a great opportunity to talk to colleges about their school and ask questions. Talking to representatives can give you a better idea about their offerings and what might help you get into their school.

More visits will be scheduled soon, so stay tuned!
Goodwill Collections Event

Missed the last one?  Here's another chance to get rid of your old clutter - bring it all to school!

REMEMBER THE DATE!

Saturday, September 27

10am - 4pm (corrected)

Goodwill Trailer will be in the Tahoma turn-around to accept E-waste, clothing, shoes, toys, household appliances and housewares - pretty much everything except large furniture.

The more we collect, the more money for our schools - we made almost $1500 last time by filling up the trailer!  Please help us reach our goal of filling up another trailer!
