Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

The first week of Summer of Summit was a huge success with students and teachers bringing an incredible amount of positive energy, enthusiasm, and excitement for learning. All students completed an argumentative essay where they practiced the skills of writing claims, using evidence and analysis. This week, they will be continuing to explore their topic by developing their understanding of how they have a personal impact on the issue that they are studying. Although the major focus of Summer of Summit is cognitive skill growth, students passed more than 50 content assessments each day! To celebrate a week of success and positivity, the students and teachers had a pizza party on Friday and played soccer together.

Our next PIVOT meeting is this Thursday, July 10 at Tahoma. The main focus of this meeting will be our next two big events, the Summer Mixer on August 2 and the Camping Trip. Our new PIVOT co-chairs Sylvia Pardini and Julie Ramirez will be sharing some information about plans for PIVOT next year. We hope to see you there!

Speaking of the Summer Mixer, it runs from 4 - 6pm on August 2 and we expect a big turnout with returning and new families from both campuses joining together to build excitement for the 2014-2015 school year. All San Jose community members are welcome, so bring along relatives, coworkers, friends, and your child's friends to join in on the festivities.

As a reminder, we will be sending home two mailings this summer. The first mailer has already gone out and contained report card information. The second will go out in mid-July to all families. This will include all necessary forms for next year as well as data from our parent survey.

Summer is usually a down time for schools but we have a lot of great things going on. We expect the next four weeks of Summer of Summit to be just as exciting and beneficial as the first one.

Sincerely,

Jesse Roe, Executive Director

Kevin Bock, Assistant Director

Recruitment

We still have openings in next year's incoming 9th grade class and limited space for transferring 10th, 11th and 12th graders. If you have friends, family members, co-workers, etc. who have children who will be in high school in the fall, please be sure to direct them to the Summit San Jose website

We have scheduled summer Recruitment Open House events for:

Tuesday, July 8, 6:30pm, Tahoma Campus

NEW Tuesday, July 22, 6:30pm, Tahoma Campus

NEW Tuesday, August 5, 6:30pm, Tahoma Campus

The events are for both Tahoma and Rainier and will be held jointly.

We are looking for help passing out flyers in the community. Would you be willing to post/leave flyers at local businesses, schools, libraries and other community locations? Please contact Crystal Speed at crystal.b.speed@gmail.com or (408) 219-9433. You can also help spread the word with these flyers in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.

Thanks to the Tibbils family and Zanotto's Family Markets for promoting Summit in their recent flyer!

Bulldogs and Thunderbirds-

Do you know a high school student who might want to come to Summit?

Do you want a chance to win a prize worth $300?

Rainier and Tahoma still have a few openings left for next year in each grade level. We want to fill those spots with your friends, neighbors, and family members to create an even closer and stronger school community.

Linked are flyers for our summer open houses for Rainier and Tahoma (English, Spanish, Vietnamese). You can print them out or stop by the Tahoma office to pick up copies. Then give them out to people who might be interested in Summit. You can also send people to our website to apply: www.summitsanjose.org

  • 1 entry for each student who comes to one of our open houses and mentions your name

  • 2 entries for each student who turns in an application and puts your name down for how they heard about Summit

  • 3 entries for each student who enrolls at Summit because of you

During the first week of school, we will hold the drawing for a $300 Visa gift card that you can spend everywhere Visa cards are accepted. The more entries you have, the more likely that you could be the winner, so get those flyers and applications out to your friends soon!

Gilroy Garlic Festival

The Gilroy Garlic Festival is one of the premier food events in the state. Volunteers are needed to help prepare food in the Gourmet Alley. No experience needed, you will be trained on the job. You will earn money for Summit San Jose Schools and the volunteer hours will count towards your annual commitment. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old, so our high school students can volunteer too. Learn more and sign up here.

Summer Interact

Interact Club of Summit Rainier is hosting a Summer Interact program from early July to mid-August. Interact Club is the youth division of Rotary International. Interact Club focuses on teaching people the importance of serving the community while making new friends, having fun, and building leadership skills. We have a mixture of both service events and fun bonding get-togethers planned such as ice skating and ice cream socials. We especially encourage incoming freshmen to sign up as they figure out what they want to do in high school as well as meet their fellow Bulldogs before school starts in August. There is no monetary fee for Interact, but the time your student puts into Interact will pay you back many times over.

For more information, please contact  the Club President, John Gundayao at jgundayao.ra@mysummitps.org.
