Message from the Directors
Dear Rainier Families,
All of the Rainier teachers were inspired by the work of students during Expeditions. Not only did the students create amazing projects and performances in their Expeditions courses they also did an impressive job of passing 491 assessments and turning in 350 projects in just 5 days with only two hours of academic classes each day! We are excited to see this momentum continue through the end of the school year.
College Night
This week's college night for 11th grade families, but open to all families, is devoted to finding the best fit college for your student. There are an overwhelming number of options when it comes to college and Thursday night's meeting will be another step in the direction of narrowing down those options. We hope to see you at 6:30pm at Rainier.
Uniform Policy
After three years of having a uniform policy at both Summit San Jose schools, both Rainier and Tahoma have agreed to revisit this policy and make a decision about our dress policies next year. We have not made a decision yet but we have heard from many students, teachers, and families that the current policy leads to inconsistent enforcement and frustration and we want to fix that. Our plan is to gather input on this decision over the next two weeks and share a final policy with families at the PIVOT meeting on June 5. If you would like to take a closer look at the process we are using the make this decision, that can be found through this link. We are hosting students who want to share their thoughts on uniforms in room 1218 during lunch on Thursday and parents can do the same on Friday morning in the main office any time after 7:30 am. We've already heard a lot from students and parents about the uniforms but we'd love to hear from you if you want to add your voice.
CAHSEE Results
CAHSEE results are being mailed home this week for students who took the test in March.
MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Testing
Students will be taking the MAP test next week. MAP scores are used to monitor student growth and the date is used to help drive instruction. The schedule looks like this:
Tuesday 1/2 period (math)
Wednesday 3/4 period (reading)
Thursday 5/6 period (grammar)
Friday PLT makeups
Lunch Payments
All lunch balances need to be paid by Thursday, June 5 in order to receive a report card. Payments can be dropped off in the office.
Parent Survey
If you have not completed the parent survey announced in the email earlier this week, please take a few minutes and do it now. We want to hear from all our parents about what we're doing well and what areas you suggest for improvement.
Your kids have been doing amazing work lately, let's celebrate that work while continuing to push for more!
Sincerely,
Jesse Roe, Executive Director
Kevin Bock, Assistant Director

- Winter Break 12/22/2014-1/5/2015
- February Break 2/16-2/20/2015

A reminder to 11th grade families, we are holding a joint college night with Tahoma families on the Rainier campus on Thursday, May 22 at 6:30pm. This session will build on the previous session where we discussed the application process and scholarships. We will discuss finding a best fit college, what to do this summer to prepare for college, and we will preview what senior year will look like. Following the college session will be a coffee with the directors open to all Rainier families where Mr. Roe and Mr. Bock will be available for a discussion.
Mark your calendars for our State of the School event which will be held on Thursday May 29 from 6:30-8:30pm. This event will include a message from me about our progress this year and our hopes for next year and beyond. Another portion of the event will include students sharing their work and showing off the projects that they are most proud of. Everyone is invited and we'd love to see as many of you as possible.

Dillon Pardini has earned the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the Eagle Scout Award. As a member of Troop 92, Dillon is one of approximately 4% of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. Each candidate must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges and successfully lead and complete a community service project to earn his Eagle.
Dillon led a team of 28 volunteers over the course of three weekends, totaling 176 hours, replacing four sections of fencing in Alum Rock Park to protect native plant life. He recycled Mistletoe growing in trees and sold it at Christmas time to raise funds for his project, and donated the remaining funds to the YSI. Dillon has served in leadership positions since joining Scouts as a Tiger at age 7, including Senior Patrol Leader and Venture Crew President simultaneously, leading a Troop and Crew of 50 scouts. His volunteer hours over the course of the past 4.5 years total over 800 hours. Congratulations, Dillon!

PIVOT
As this school year heads toward the end, we need to start planning for next year. We need parents to step up and take on leadership roles for the school. Please sign up or re-commit on this list:
We ask that each family contribute 40 hours towards the school each year. You can help fulfill this by signing up for one of the jobs listed. If you are not able to commit to a job now, please consider driving on the fall Camping Trip or spring Study Trips which depend on parent drivers.
