Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

Another busy week is facing us before next week's Spring break. Please note that school will be closed April 21-25 for Spring Break. Classes will resume Monday, April 28.

This past Friday after the Bully film, Rainier students and faculty met in community groups to discuss school culture and student relationships. There were many heartfelt discussions in the classrooms and conversations continued well after school was dismissed. Several students have stepped forward to propose an anti-bullying club on campus. Stay tuned for further updates. Please notify the Rainier administration if school concerns arise at home. We will be proactive as long as we know the details. If you're interested in this topic, here are additional activities from an excellent source, Facing History and Ourselves - Bully Guide.

This is a busy week for our 10th graders. Administration of the CST Science test was Tuesday with makeups on Wednesday. On Thursday, the group travels to UC Davis and Cal State East Bay to explore these colleges. Those staying behind will have customized schedules.

Please note that we are keeping track of the time tardy students arrive to campus. If they are late two or more times/week, they will be added to our daily 7 am wake up call to home. Every minute counts in the classrooms. Thank you for your support with this effort.

Computer update: Our Chromebook refurbishment project is a success!! Not one computer has been stolen or lost during the past two weeks! Unfortunately three Chromebook screens were broken because students mishandled the computers. Please remind your student to treat the school technology with care.

Immediately following Spring Break, our 11th graders will be involved in the launch of the Smarter Balanced field tests across schools in the state. These computer-based assessments will be administered to three million students in school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools. No student, school, or district scores will be produced from this year's field test because its purpose is to "test the test"-to determine how well the test questions and technology work. The test questions are quite different from the multiple-choice STAR exams. Smarter Balanced assessments emphasize critical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving-modeling the kind of teaching and learning needed to prepare all students for the demands of college and the modern workplace. For further information, please refer to the link

On Saturday, May 3, 2014 the AAUW and County of Santa Clara are hosting an exciting leadership conference for high school girls. Strong Girls, Strong Women will be held at the School of Arts and Culture @ Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose from 8:00am-1:30pm. Registration is free but RSVP is required. To learn more go to:

Have a wonderful Spring Break.

Sincerely,

Lesley Martin, Interim Principal

Dena Zingales, Principal Resident

 9th Grade Teachers

All 9th grade students will be doing Physical Fitness Testing on Thursday, May 1. We are excited for this day of exercise and discussion of physical wellness!

Students should not feel like they need to prepare for this day. Some things that students should know:
  • We will be asking for students' weight. Please be prepared to give us your weight or use a scale. Weight will be asked for privately.
  • We will also be asking for students' height.
  • Dress in athletic/loose-fitting clothing and wear comfortable shoes that complies with Rainier's dress code. (No blue /red or clothes that have Sharks, Niners, Raiders or Cowboys insignia).
  • Please bring:
    • Towel
    • Water bottle

Spring Fiesta

A few more thank yous to some of the Raffle Basket donors that were inadvertently omitted last week:

Beautiful Smile Basket donated by Image Orthodontics
Garden Basket donated by Lindstrom Family
Bath and Body Basket donated by Speed Family
Coach Bag donated by Villareal Family

Again, thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this event. For Rainier alone, we brought in $1960.50 in raffle and food sales.

Goodwill Collection
Together with Tahoma, we held our first Goodwill Collections event on Saturday, April 12. Thanks to the promotions, word of mouth, and our school communities, we were able to fill the 20-foot Goodwill trailer a good 75%. According to the Goodwill attendant who manned the event all day, that was a really good showing for a school collections event. The trailer will be weighed and the schools will get a percentage of the $1,500 for a full load. Thank you again to all those who took the time to clean out their closets and garages! This was an easy Saturday event with little planning required, so let's make this a yearly event!

 Helen Sironen

We will be celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week in May with a week of love for our amazing teachers and mentors. Show your appreciation by volunteering to bring items for breakfast (Monday), a luncheon (Thursday), bringing fresh cut flowers from your garden (Tuesday), writing a note of thanks. We are asking for a $5 donation per student to help cover costs for the festivities. A collection box will be in the office after Spring Break. Please contact the grade level coordinators if you have any questions.

 Coach Aaron Smith

The Rainier Bulldog Baseball Team had a great weekend of baseball games, starting off Friday with a decisive win over Harker Academy, winning 18-7. Then Saturday was an exciting game against Crystal Springs Uplands. After allowing 8 runs in the first 2 innings, our team settled down and didn't allow any more runs. Sophomore pitcher Anthony Parra threw a complete 7 inning game, with a thrilling comeback. The Bulldogs scored 13 runs in the last few innings to come back from 8-0, scoring 8 runs in the 6th inning to seal the 13-8 victory. Go Bulldogs!
