Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

We had a highly successful first week and half of Expeditions. Students have enjoyed their Expedition classes along with working hard on project and assessments during the Student Success Program. Students learned some specific techniques such as Cornell notes, outlines and graphic organizers, to apply to their everyday learning. As the Expeditions and Student Success Program comes to close, we plan to celebrate the students' accomplishments next Tuesday morning.

Refurnish and reissue of Chromebooks: As you may know, many of the student Chromebooks are damaged or are missing pieces. The Summit Tech team will refurbish all Chromebooks over this holiday weekend ready for distribution on Tuesday, April 1. We plan to hold an all school assembly to discuss students' responsibility and commitment to maintain this technology. All students will sign an updated use agreement. All computer serial numbers will be recorded and tracked. The Chromebooks will be stored on computer carts in grade level classrooms. Each student will have a labeled slot to charge their computer.

Students who have maintained their computers from Sept. - March will receive a treat Friday at lunch. Students who continue to maintain their computers for the remainder of the school year (no damage/loss) will receive a little reward at the end of the school year. For students who break or lose a computer - parents will be called and they will be required to complete community service. Loaners will be issued with a required cellphone or wallet (if no cellphone).

Starting April 1, our brunch and lunch food service will move to a new covered location on the Mount Pleasant Campus. This change is due to health code restrictions. The area located near our restrooms will be well supervised but we encourage students to pick up their meals and walk back to campus.

Dress code: Spring has sprung! As we welcome the warm weather, students tend to stretch the limits of dress. Please remind your student of the following dress code: (Page 19 of the Rainier Student Handbook).

Uniform Options for Shirts and Pants

* All pants, skirts or shorts must be solid black or khaki.

* Girls have options of pants, shorts or skirts and boys can wear pants or shorts
* Skirts and shorts need to be no shorter than students' fingertips when their arms are at their sides.
* No leggings can be worn as pants

* Students must wear a polo shirt - plain white, black, or gray non-logo shirts or Summit San Jose Logo shirts
* The only thing that can be worn over polos are solid gray, black, or white sweatshirts/jackets or school sweatshirts/jackets
* Any symbols or items related to Sharks, Niners, Raiders, and Cowboys ARE NOT ALLOWED!
* No RED or BLUE or shades of red or blue (including maroon and teal) on all clothing, accessories, school supplies, and backpacks (anything visible)
* Students' accessories cannot signify gang affiliation or other distractions from learning

9th Grade College Night - Tuesday, April 1, 6:30pm on the Tahoma Campus. All 9th graders and their parents are invited to attend.

9th and 10th grade Parent/Student Night, Thursday, April 3, 5:30pm on the Rainier campus. All 9th and 10th grade parents and students are invited to meet with Rainier teachers to learn about the student dashboard and check on student progress. This special evening is open to everyone. We encourage you to attend.

Next Friday, April 4 the 9th and 10th grade classes will view the film, Bully, a documentary about the school culture. We hope to shed some light on this difficult issue and discuss ways to ensure our school is safe and supportive. Coach J and the basketball and baseball coaches have been invited to be a part of this event and follow up discussion. We hope to forge a strong community relationship with our sports coaches who work directly with our students.

Have a great week! Reminder, no school next Monday due to the Cesar Chavez holiday. Students need to come on time and ready to shine on Tuesday. We also hope that all of you will be able to join us for the Spring Fiesta on April 5.

Summit Public Schools: Rainier

Update on Facilities/District Board Meeting
David Richards, Executive Director

It was amazing to see dozens of Summit Rainier & Tahoma families stand up and demand equitable facilities for our children at last Thursday's East Side Union Board meeting. It was a powerful and important reminder to the District that Rainier and Tahoma students are public school students who deserve comparable facilities to what all other District students receive. More information appeared in the Summit Insider on March 25. Click here to view.

Expeditions Competition
Dena Zingales, Principal Resident

As Rainier students are turning in projects and content assessments this week, they are fueled with a friendly competition. For the grade level that passes the most content assessments, they will receive a
pizza party. If Rainier can turn in more than 200 content assessments, the entire school can get a donut party!

The grade level that turns in the most completed projects in the next two weeks gets a relaxed dress day. If Rainier can get more than 100 completed projects turned in, the entire school receives a relaxed dress day. If Rainier can achieve both goals, the entire school will get a relaxed dress week!
