Interim Principal

Dear Rainier Community,

We are working hard to build a positive and safe school environment and culture for our community. Student physical and emotional safety is a top priority for us. The administration and faculty are working together to ensure we rebuild our community around our core value of small and safe environment where every child is known.

Here are the things we will be focusing on during this Expeditions session to create this environment.

* On-going and open conversations and dialogue between students and faculty will, as always, be welcomed.

* Today, Wednesday 3/19, Expedition Teachers will be leading 10th grade students in a community building game after they complete their CAHSEE (yay!) that will help students get to know one another. As we know, communities are safe when everybody feels known and trusted, and building community is the best way we know how to do that.

* Next Thursday, students will be hearing from Helen Farkas, a Holocaust Survivor, to not only learn about the history they are studying in class more in depth, but also to be exposed to the way Nazi Germany turned its population against groups within the country. At the end of the presentation, Helen will ask to consider and discuss how this information translates to their lives today.

* Next Friday, our 10th grade students will be watching a film called "Bully" with their classmates and discussing the essential core of what makes a great school: A physically and emotionally safe environment for all students. The film is incredibly powerful, and will be followed up by restorative discussions within their mentor groups. Other grade levels will view this movie later.

We will enforce high expectations for behavior and work diligently to create this positive and safe environment for our students.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Lesley Martin, Interim Principal
