Message from Dr. Martin
Dear Rainier Families,
We started schedule C this week. Students will meet with teachers at different times of the school day. This change will have no impact on students' individual schedules.
Ms. Miranda has recovered and is back at school. Flu is going around so please keep students home if they have a fever or are feeling ill.
Just a reminder to pay your student's Revolution Foods Lunch online account. Currently we are running significantly in the red as many students owe money from their purchased lunches.
This past Thursday, a small contained fire broke out on the north side of the Mt. Pleasant High School campus. Emergency services responded immediately. Our students were never in danger and continued to work in their classrooms. We plan to hold a series of emergency drills over the next few weeks to remind students of our school emergency procedures.
All the grade teams are working together to raise money for this year's Study Trips by reaching out to our personal and professional networks with GoFundMe.com. The goal of raising $6000 is to make it possible for all 9th and 10th grade students to participate! We have a great start but would love to get parents and students involved in this process - please share this link with your contacts:
9th and 10th grades: http://www.gofundme.com/76dia0
11th grade: http://www.gofundme.com/789xk0
Any questions, please contact Ms. Goddard
Over the past few weeks, our mentor groups have been revisiting the Summit core values during Community Time. As a school community, we decided to reinforce the values of respect and responsibility throughout our campus. Mentor groups and student-led clubs have initiated various planned school activities to reinforce these values. An example of this process is the Student Shared Discussion Group, who are developing several proposals to submit to the faculty consideration. 25+ students meet every Friday to plan student involvement for a more positive responsive school culture. Several representatives of this group will present a report at the upcoming PIVOT meeting.
The Parent PIVOT Group meets at Rainier this Thursday, March 6. 6:30-8:30.
Daylight Savings Time starts next week when we spring our clocks ahead one hour and lose one hour of sleep. Don't forget to change your clocks on March 9.
Water bottles are available in the office to students free of charge. Thank you to the families who so generously donated to this effort.
Please see the link to the most recent parent letter including responses from the Summit San Jose Leadership Team. We are always available if you have questions or concerns.
Have a good week.

Every year, each grade goes on a Study Trip, an extended field trip designed to expand student learning outside the school walls and give students an opportunity to visit a variety of colleges. Patti Hares, Phillis Chan, and Helen Sironen have taken on the task of organizing the grade level trips, which are planned for:
- 11th - Wed - Fri, April 2-4, Southern California -
- 10th - Thur - Fri, April 17-18 - UC Davis and other schools -
- 9th - Thur - Fri, March 13-14 - UC Santa Cruz/CSU Monterey -
We currently do not have enough committed drivers! Please check out the signup lists above. Information about the trips and a signup form was sent home, a copy of the form is posted here. For more information about these trips, please contact Patti, Phillis or Helen at the contact info listed on the link above.
Study Trip Payments
Starting March 6, 9th grade parents who signed up for an online payment account can begin paying for the Study Trips online. You should receive an email with instructions of how to proceed. Online payments for 10th and 11th grade trips will be available soon.
Study Trip Fundraising
So that every student may participate, we have kicked off online fundraising efforts. Please share these links with your family and friends.

Grade 10: CAHSEE (California High School Exit Examination) March 18 and 19
Parents, Please ensure your student is in attendance for this very important test! CAHSEE is designed to help students waive their remedial courses at university. They should come to school well rested and after having a nutritions breakfast.
Practice tests and study guides are available here.
Grade 11: EAP (Early Assessment Program) Writing Portion March 14
Parents, EAP is part of the STAR test. It is a CSU requirement. Once students graduate from high school, the test is no longer free. Please review these two documents ( About the EAP and Scoring Guide) with your student. EAP Math and Multiple Choice is also coming up. We will inform you of the dates once we gain state notification.
Grade 11: AP Tests: May 6-16 (Date varies with test) Students will be meeting with their teachers within the next few weeks to discuss which tests they will commit to. Ordering for AP tests is due March 28th. Once we have received the exams, information regarding payment and scholarship waivers will be dispensed. The actual test will be administered between May 6 and 16th.

Spring Fiesta
Our Spring Fiesta will be held on April 5 from noon until 3pm. This is a joint event with Tahoma.
Festivities include tag football games of students vs. faculty, a taco dinner, a raffle, and a contest for Best Salsa! This event will bring together Rainier and Tahoma - students, faculty, and families - to spark pride in our schools, to hang out together, share food and friendships, and show our commitment to Summit. More than ever before, we need this event to be a success! And we can't do it without all of us together!
Our raffle tickets will be going home with students this Friday! Tickets can be returned to the office and additional tickets will be available for pickup. Winners need not be present to win so sell to family and friends.
Office Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to support Ms Miranda in the Rainier front office by performing light office work such as answering phones, filing, and assisting students. Please sign up here if you can help!
Help is especially needed this Thursday and Friday, March 6 and 7 to help with the enrollment packets for incoming students.

Summit's Roller Hockey team just completed the winter hockey season and we will be starting the spring season this Saturday.
We may not have won every game this year, but we grew as a team. We all became better players and learned more from the coach (Mr. Lee) and one another, and more specifically from our practices and our games. With every game, our determination and dedication to the team grew. We played our best in every single game and never gave up. It is nice to see every team member grow as a hockey player during the course of this season. I started the roller hockey team so that we would get a chance to learn, play, and enjoy the sport which many of us would not have had the opportunity otherwise. We are confident that we will come back as a more determined, and much stronger hockey team next season. We are very thankful to the school, the coach, and the parents for their great support to our hockey team. The logo on our hockey uniform was created in memory and honor of Justin Semana.

Vianet Orzoco Ortiz visits Paris and London
Rainier Junior, Vianet Orozco
 | Vianet at Big Ben in London |
Ortiz, recently spent 7 days in London and Paris as part of Education First Tours (EF Tours). She visited Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the Eye of London, The Champs-Élysées, and the Eiffel Tower. Vianet also saw the Mona Lisa! This opportunity taught her background information about France and England that will help her with classes. The best part of the trip was "taking public transportation because it was interesting to see different people -- some people played instruments on the buses!"
