Hello Parents,
We are excited to start celebrating excellent behavior modeling! I would love to see decorative small boxes (like upright tissue boxes) made for each classroom so students and teachers can collect the positive behavior cards that we will be introducing shortly.
These boxes should be small but decorative so that they do not take up a great deal of space but are also visually pleasing and attractive.
If you want more ideas, I have several, just see me.
We also need one larger box for weekly drawings during our whole school assembly.

Message from Dr. Martin
Dear Rainier Families,
Over the past two Fridays, more than twenty-five Rainier students met to discuss increasing student involvement on school issues. Students are writing proposals to promote positive school change. These proposals will be presented to the Rainier Teacher Leadership Team. Some ideas being considered are a school fun day, cross grade mentor group's activities and use of student mentor time. Rainier is moving forward together with our students, staff and parents.
This past Friday Rainier Bulldogs challenged Tahoma Thunderbirds in a hard fought basketball battle. Our Bulldogs were victorious! The bleachers were full as the Summit community came together to cheer all our players! Go Bulldogs!
The college study trips are around the corner and we still need your help to make them happen!! The teachers and administration have been working hard in organizing all the details for successful study trips for our students, but they will not happen if we don't have enough drivers. You can still make it possible by signing up to drive for your grade or any other help you can give.
Over the past week, the Summit Insider has published daily updates on activities and events at the two Summit San Jose schools. Of particular note is the daily Tech Tip which details how to look up your student's academic progress. The best way to view this program is to work with your student and log in together using your student's password. Please let us know if you have any trouble accessing this information.
We will be continuing to send out the "Summit Insider" which highlights what is going on in our school with the hope that we can give parents an "inside" look into Rainier. Please let us know if you are not receiving the Insider.
A few notes on upcoming events:
This Thursday, February 27, is the 10th grade College Night at Rainier from 6:30-8:30pm. All 10th grade students and parents are invited. There will be a presentation and discussion about the college process, testing, financial aid and what kids should do over the summer to prepare for college. Spanish translation will be available.
Our monthly Directors Coffee will be this Friday, February 28 from 9-10 am at Starbucks. All are invited!
Have a wonderful week!

Summit Core Characteristics
Ms. Zingales
This past Friday morning the Rainier community came together for an all school assembly to focus on the school's core values of respect, responsibility, courage, compassion, curiosity and integrity. Teachers stated what these values meant to them and reminded the students that they will be looking for these values on a daily basis. We look forward to many more assemblies to celebrate our students and the values they embody each day on our campus.
We are trying to support students on exhibiting core characteristics of Summit values. These are guidelines to set standards of behavior that we expect from faculty, parents, students and our community partners:
- Compassion - Caring and feeling responsible for the success and concerns of others.
- Courage - Making hard choices when it matters; standing up for our beliefs and taking thoughtful risks.
- Curiosity - Questioning, examining and challenging with an open heart and mind.
- Integrity - Doing the right thing even when nobody is watching; telling the truth for the good of the community.
- Respect - Valuing and recognizing the unique gifts and abilities of others as well as our own.
- Responsibility - Following through on our commitments and obligations, and accepting the consequences of our actions.
Every Friday, students have a one hour period with their mentor where they discuss valuable character skills like empathy, self-confidence, and body language. These lessons are shared publicly on community.summitps.org so that students and parents can access them at any point. If you are looking for ways to support your child's personal growth, you can watch the videos from the blog and talk them over during dinner or on the drive to school.

Academic Support
Teachers and mentors are concerned that students are falling behind and not getting projects and playlists completed. Please check your student's PLP dashboard to see how they are progressing in their classes. If students are falling behind, please make sure that they take advantage of the following support structures.

- get help with assignments or homework
- receive one-on-one or small-group tutoring in a subject
- work with peers on a special project
- enrich their learning on a particular topic
- study in a quiet environment
Before School PLT
All students are encouraged to attend the extended Personal Learning Time before school at 7:45am. Students can meet with teachers for individual academic help. Please note the following assigned days for each subject:

Spring Fiesta
We are starting to plan our joint school-wide spring event to be held on April 5 with Tahoma. We need everyone's input, talent, and spirit to plan a successful event to raise money for our schools and pump up our school pride! Festivities include tag football games of students vs. faculty, a taco dinner, a raffle and a contest for Best Salsa! This event will bring together Rainier and Tahoma - students, faculty and families - to spark pride in our schools, to hang out together, share food and friendships and show our commitment to Summit. More than ever before, we need this event to be a success! And we can't do it without all of us together!
Please contact Sue Mendez for more information or to sign up to help.
Office Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to support Ms Miranda in the Rainier front office by performing light office work such as answering phones, filing, and assisting students. Please sign up here if you can help!

The deadline for the March Lottery for next year's entering students is fast approaching. All applications for next school year are due February 28 to be eligible for the first lottery. Being in the first lottery gives you the best chance of securing a spot. Siblings of current Summit students are given a preference in the lottery but are not guaranteed to have a spot, so please turn in your applications this week for siblings. Additionally, please tell your family members, friends, and neighbors who are interested in Summit to drop off their applications in the office this week.
Applications received after February 28 will be placed in additional lotteries if space is available. There will be another Informational Open House meeting on March 11 (6:30pm at Tahoma). Flyers are available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Please distribute these flyers in your communities.
Parents and students are needed to help answer questions at the Open House events. Please volunteer to help on this list.
