Message from the Directors
Dear Rainier Families,
Welcome to our newest community member: Patrick Leslie Lamcke was born on Saturday, February 15. He weighed 7 lbs, 4 oz. Congratulations to Ms. Lamcke! We want to remind you that while Ms. Lamcke is out on maternity leave, Dr. Lesley Martin and Dena Zingales will be filling in with support from Mr. Richards.
We have been listening to parents about our need to communicate better. Be on the lookout for the new "Summit Insider." This will be highlighting what is going on in our school with the hope that we can give parents an "inside" look into Rainier. This will be coming out over the next several days.
We will use this newsletter, The Summit Insider, and our automatic phone calling system to communicate updates and exciting news.
All students are encouraged to attend the extended Personal Learning Time before school at 7:45am. Students can meet with teachers for individual academic help. Please note the following assigned days for each subject: Monday - English Tuesday - History Wednesday - Spanish Thursday - Science Friday - Math
We appreciate your partnership in working together to provide the best education for our students. Our doors are always open and available to you.
David Richards, Executive Director
Pamela Lamcke, Principal (maternity leave)
Lesley Martin, Interim Principal
Jessica Miranda, Operations Manager
Lia Pinelli, Assistant Director
Dena Zingales, Principal Resident

Community meeting update
At the February 13th meeting with Summit Public Schools CEO, Diane Tavenner, spoke to a packed auditorium of Rainier and Tahoma parents, students and community members, addressing many of these questions and recommendations for change. Although not all of the questions were answered that night, Ms. Tavenner has agreed to provide a written response for the entire community by February 28th.
Rainier students have also been meeting to have their voices heard. On Fridays, the Shared Decision Making group meets in Ms. Whited's room at lunch. Last week 24 students and 8 faculty and staff members met to discuss how students could have a voice in changing our school. They started talking about action steps that need to taken in order to have a triangular communication system (between teachers/administrators, students, and parents). Please contact Rainier Junior Jolyssa Souza for more information about how students can become more involved.

Every year, each grade goes on a Study Trip, an extended field trip designed to expand student learning outside the school walls and give students an opportunity to visit a variety of colleges. Patti Hares, Phillis Chan, and Helen Sironen have taken on the task of organizing the grade level trips, which are planned for:
- 11th - Wed - Fri, April 2-4, Southern California -
- 10th - Thur - Fri, April 17-18 - UC Davis and other schools -
- 9th - Thur - Fri, March 13-14 - UC Santa Cruz/CSU Monterey -
We currently do not have enough committed drivers! The study trip coordinators are currently seeking drivers and have set a deadline of February 21 to determine if there will be enough volunteer interest to make these trips possible. Information about the trips and a signup form was sent home, a copy of the form is posted here. For more information about these trips, please contact Patti, Phillis or Helen at the contact info listed on the link above.

Spring Fiesta
We are starting to plan our joint school-wide spring event to be held on April 5 with Tahoma. We need everyone's input, talent, and spirit to plan a successful event to raise money for our schools and pump up our school pride! Festivities include tag football games of students vs. faculty, a taco dinner, a raffle and a contest for Best Salsa! This event will bring together Rainier and Tahoma - students, faculty and families - to spark pride in our schools, to hang out together, share food and friendships and show our commitment to Summit. More than ever before, we need this event to be a success! And we can't do it without all of us together!
Please contact Sue Mendez for more information or to sign up to help.
