Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

This Thursday, February 13, we are having a night to reconnect and recommit to Summit's mission, together. We will gather in the Tahoma auditorium at 6:30pm with Diane Tavenner, Founder and CEO of Summit Public Schools; David Richards, Executive Director of Summit San Jose; and Rainier and Tahoma Principals Pamela Lamcke and Nicholas Kim. Our dialogue will focus on how we can work together as a community of parents, teachers, students, and school leaders to move our schools closer to our mission-to prepare a diverse student population for success in a four-year college or university, and to be thoughtful, contributing members of society.

We hope that you will be able to join us.

Respectfully,

Pamela Lamcke, Principal

Lia Pinelli, Assistant Director

PIVOT meeting update

More than 50 parents attended last Thursday's PIVOT meeting (25 Rainier and 25 Tahoma). Based on the meeting minutes (posted here), a group of Rainier and Tahoma parents have tried to streamline the concerns expressed and has sent this

list of questions and recommendations for change to Summit's administrators. This list of questions should not be considered the agenda, the agenda for this Thursday's meeting will be set by Summit administration.

Spring Event Volunteers

We are starting to plan our joint school-wide spring event to be held on April 5 with Tahoma. We need everyone's input, talent, and spirit to plan a successful event to raise money for our schools and pump up our school pride!  Our initial ideas are a tag football game of students vs. faculty, a fiesta dinner of tacos and sides, a raffle and a contest for Best Salsa! This event will bring together Rainier and Tahoma - students, faculty and families - to spark pride in our schools, to hang out together, share food and friendships and show our commitment to Summit. More than ever before, we need this event to be a success! And we can't do it without all of us together!

There will be a committee meeting next Tuesday, February 18 at 6:30pm at the Starbucks on White and Story. We need volunteers to lead committees for this event. Please sign up here or contact Janet Amaro for more information.

Recruitment Volunteers
Please continue to spread the word about Summit Public Schools. We are now accepting applications for next year's freshman class. Applications are due February 28 for the first lottery, and highest chance of acceptance. Applications received after February 28 will be placed in additional lotteries if space is available. There will be another Informational Open House meeting on March 11 (6:30pm at Tahoma). Flyers are available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Please distribute these flyers in your communities.

Parents and students are needed to help answer questions at the Open House events. Please volunteer to help on this list.

Office Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to support Ms Miranda in the Rainier front office by performing light office work such as answering phones, filing, and assisting students. Please sign up here if you can help!

Every year, each grade goes on a Study Trip, an extended field trip designed to expand student learning outside the school walls and give students an opportunity to visit a variety of colleges. Patti Hares, Phillis Chan, and Helen Sironen have taken on the task of organizing the 11th, 10th and 9th grade trips, which are planned for:

  • 11th - Wed - Fri, April 2-4, Southern California - need 16 parent drivers
  • 10th - Thur - Fri, April 17-18 - UC Davis and other schools - need 25 parent drivers
  • 9th - Thur - Fri, March 13-14 - UC Santa Cruz/CSU Monterey -need 25 parent drivers

The study trip coordinators are currently seeking drivers and have set a deadline of February 21 to determine if there will be enough volunteer interest to make these trips possible. Information about the trips and a signup form was sent home with students last week, a copy of the form is posted here. For more information about these trips, please contact Patti, Phillis or Helen at the contact info listed on the link above.

2014 Doodle for Google Competition

Before there was an airplane, there were doodles of cool flying machines. And before there was a submarine, there were doodles of magical underwater sea explorers. Since the beginning of time, ideas big and small, practical and playful, have started out as doodles. And we're ready for more. The theme of this year's Doodle for Google contest is "If I Could Invent One Thing to Make the World a Better Place...."

One talented young artist will see his or her artwork on the Google homepage and receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant for his or her school. More information here. Deadline for entries is March 20, 2014.

CodeNow Opportunity

CodeNow is a local nonprofit that teaches underrepresented youth computer programming skills. Our mission is to narrow the digital divide in the tech community by providing coding courses to high school students who would not normally have access to such technology. There will be a training to learn how to create interactive games and applications in the programming language Ruby. Students will receive individualized training from industry professional at a local tech company. Best of all, no prior programming skills are needed!

The training will be held February 15, 16, and March 1. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Interested students should apply online at codenow.org/apply/.
