Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

Students have been working in their Expeditions classes these past two weeks. Through our yearlong courses, workshops, and internship offerings, students gain skills - problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, persistence towards excellence - to meet our mission. With teaching Habits of Success at the heart of everything we do, students will develop cognitive skills and content in Leadership and Active Citizenship, College and Career, Health and Wellbeing, Enrichment and Passion, and Cultural Awareness and the Arts.

While students have been with their Expeditions teachers, our academic teachers have also been hard at work in professional development to make sure that they are continuously growing and improving as educators.

Next week, students return to the regular academic schedule. We encourage all parents to actively support their student by ensuring that he/she is on track with projects and playlists for each class. You can always check your student's progress on the PLP tool (http://app.mysummitps.org). Students who are behind should seek help from teachers during before or after school PLT.

Respectfully,

Pamela Lamcke, Principal

Lia Pinelli, Assistant Director

Mickayla-Bay Washington, Rainier 11th grader, flew to Tacoma last week to help Summit open a high school in the state of Washington. Mickayla testified on Summit Public School's behalf at a Community Forum, a critical part of the chartering process in which members of the public get to learn about and show their support for Summit. Mickayla spoke passionately in front of a room of 100 people, telling her life story and how she found Summit. The following day, she was quoted in the Tacoma News Tribune! Mickayla played a crucial role in helping Summit get chartered in Tacoma.

    Recruitment Volunteers
Please continue to spread the word about Summit Public Schools. We are now accepting applications for next year's freshman class. Applications are due February 28 for the first lottery, and highest chance of acceptance. There will be Informational Open House meetings on February 8 (10am at Rainier) and March 11 (6:30pm at Tahoma). Flyers are available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Please distribute these flyers in your communities.

Parents and students are needed to help answer questions at the Open House events. Please volunteer to help on this list.

Presentations will be given by financial aid representatives from Santa Clara University in both English and Spanish. This is your chance to hear about paying for college from the experts! We hope you will join us.

Rainier Speech and Debate competed at a speech tournament at Milpitas High School last Saturday. In preliminary rounds, Ian Torres received a 3rd place rank in domestic extemporaneous speaking and Nate Tibbils received a 2nd place rank in impromptu speaking. These results are impressive considering that Ian and Nate had no tournament experience in these events; they were competing against varsity speech students. Their success builds on great results from October, when Meaghan Allen finished undefeated in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate at Presentation High School.

The Speech and Debate Club meets in room 1207 at 4pm on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please see Mr. Pratt for more information.

    Andrea "Sug" Lopez

SFSU Asst Coach Matson, Andrea "Sug" Lopez and Head Coach Byrne

Great news for 11th grade student Andrea Lopez! This weekend "Sug" attended her fourth softball camp at SFSU and received a verbal commitment from San Francisco State University Head Coach Byrne to play for the Gators. Andrea has put in long hours of practice and conditioning to make this dream come true. Andrea picked up her first softball when she was six, started playing softball for the San Jose Sting at age 12 and has traveled all over to play against the most competitive teams. Andrea plays year round and has been as far as Colorado, Texas and Las Vegas. Andrea currently plays softball for San Jose Sting 18Gold and can't wait to start playing again for Summit Rainier!

Sug plans on majoring in Criminal Justice at San Francisco State. Congratulations Sug, and parents Andrea and Joe!

Unfortunately, we have not reached our goal yet, and ask that every family participate. For more information about our Fundraising efforts, please see the PIVOT website.
