Message from the Directors
Dear Rainier Families,
Last night, one of our 11th grade students, Justin Semana, passed away from cardiac arrest following a seizure. A member of our basketball team, Justin was in the middle of basketball practice when he collapsed and was immediately taken to the hospital.
This is an immeasurable loss for us all. For the past three years, Justin has been a wonderful part of our school family and community. Justin may have seemed shy and quiet to some, but those who knew him were privileged to know a thoughtful, confident, intelligent, and respectful young man. He was supportive of his peers and truly loved being a part of his school community. Simply, he was an amazing person who will be greatly missed.
As we all cope with this loss, we are here to support your children. We will have grief counselors available on campus throughout the school day today and through the week. We encourage all Rainier students to speak with a family member, friend or counselor.
Additionally, we will be holding a whole school community meeting today at 4pm to honor and remember Justin. We will also be available to answer any questions you may have. In the meantime, please know that we will continue to share information as we have it. Our deepest condolences go out to the Semana family.
"B week" Schedule
This week, students' schedules changed slightly. We are now in "B week." The schedule rotation is now 5th period class first, followed by 6th period. 1st and 2nd period are after break, and the day ends with 3rd and 4th. This ensures that students have the opportunity to have their classes and teachers at different times of the day. This way, if a student is "not a morning person" or gets tired in the afternoon, it doesn't always affect their performance in the same classes. Student classes are the same; the order is just shifted.
Thanksgiving Break/ Student Testing
School will be closed in observance of Thanksgiving next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. We are thankful to our Rainier community for the opportunity to work with your children. After Thanksgiving, we have just three weeks before the end of the semester. This December, students will not have a traditional final exam week, since student grades are based entirely on their project grades and content assessment pass rates. Instead, students will retake the NWEA MAP test during the last week of the semester. This is a nationally-normed reference test that allows us to measure individual student growth in reading and mathematics; we will compare these results to students' scores from August to measure growth so far this year.
Grading System
With our competency-based grading system, student grades are not final until the end of the year when they have completed all of their course work. As a result, students will not have final semester grades from the fall semester; instead, we will send home a progress report that shares each student's progress at the halfway point in the year. Please remember that you can always check student grades and progress through the PLP tool, which is updated daily. Log in with your student's email and password to access a page showing your student's progress and overview of grades. If you have any questions about your student's progress or grades, please contact his/her mentor for more information.
Respectfully,
Pamela Lamcke, Principal

Upcoming Parent Education Events
Pamela Lamcke, Principal
We know that students experience the most success in school when they have consistent support from their teachers, mentors, and parents. Therefore, we are always striving to improve our parent outreach and education to ensure that parents have all the information they need to fully partner in their students' education.
At 5:30pm on Thursday, December 5 before our PIVOT meeting on the Tahoma campus, we will be holding a training session on students' Personalized Learning Plan dashboard. This is the tool that parents and students can use to track academic progress through their current projects and playlists, grades, goals, and much more. Teachers and students will be available to help walk parents through all the information available on this tool and answer their questions. This information session is open to all parents and will be held in both English and Spanish, and we hope many of you will be able to stay and attend the PIVOT meeting right afterward.
In addition, we will be hosting Teaching and Learning Tours for current parents to see our amazing teachers and students in action on a typical school day. We have tentatively planned these for Monday, December 2 at 9am and Thursday, December 12 at 9:30am. On these tours, we will explain our school model's skills-focused project-based learning and the technology platforms that support it, and will provide an opportunity to observe classrooms in action. If you are interested in being a part of one of these tours, please mark your calendars and stay tuned for more information.
We are looking forward to all of these upcoming opportunities to connect with parents about your students' education. By strengthening our partnership, we know we can increase outcomes for our students. Thank you for all that you do for your students' education!

SAT and ACT testing - 11th grade
Yes, it's time to be thinking about those exams! Since you'll be taking an ACT & SAT Test Prep course during your next College Readiness Expeditions session at the end of January, you'll want to talk with your mentor about which test dates are most suitable for you. Check out test dates and registration deadlines for the SAT and ACT. It is the student's responsibility to register for tests. There is more information in the Student Parent College Handbook on the College Readiness website. |
Fundraising
Diane Tom
Amazon.com
The Amazon associates program has been running for a little over a month now and the school has already made $46.
While this does not seem like a huge amount of money this is a dollar a day for doing nothing but normal Amazon shopping. This money was raised by 10 unique visitors (no, we don't know who they are, your info stays private). All Summit Rainier parents can EASILY help out just by using (and bookmarking to use again) our Amazon link before shopping on Amazon. Want to help even more? Ask your friends or family to use the link. The holidays are coming and if you already shop on Amazon this is so easy! Here is the link: http://www.amazon.com?_encoding=UTF8&tag=rainpivo-20 Other ways to help eScrip - Register your Safeway card, and a portion of your purchase comes back to Summit San Jose when you use your debit card, check, or cash. Credit cards will no longer earn contributions. Shop at Target with a red card? Just indicate you'd like donations to go to Rainier here: https://www-secure.target.com/redcard/tcoe/enroll We have SHARES cards in the office for anyone who shops at SaveMart, Lucky, or FoodMaxx. Just slide your card before payment and we earn a percentage of each purchase, with no additional cost to you.
