Message from the Directors
Dear Rainier Families,
It's hard to believe that we are already halfway through the first semester! By now, we hope most families have participated in a Personalized Learning Plan meeting with your student's mentor. We hope these meetings have been helpful in setting goals and plans for the year, as well as in learning more about our academic program and what families can do at home to support your student.
We know there are a number of new systems to learn this year, so we have created some resources to support families. Take a few minutes to review these resources, so you can feel confident in checking your student's progress and understanding how our program works. A short video explaining the basic features of the PLP tool.
These documents are also part of the PLP Tool. When you go to app.mysummitps.org look for a small i in the top right corner with links to each of the documents. If you are interested in additional information about the program at Summit Public Schools, including what is happening in education reform across the nation and how Summit fits in; research on blended learning; and research on college readiness, please check this playlist. As always, we encourage you to reach out to your student's mentor with any questions or concerns. We also hope to see you at the next Coffee with the Director this Friday or cafecito (November 14)!
Respectfully,
Pamela Lamcke, Principal

Reminders for the Week
Intent to Enroll Forms
We are still collecting Intent to Enroll forms, so far we have received forms for only half of our currently enrolled students. If you have not returned this form, return it to the front office as soon as possible because they are an important bargaining chip with the district to improve the Rainier campus, including bringing running water on campus for sinks, drinking fountains, science labs and more/closer bathrooms.
Parent Account Forms due November 1
We are accepting enrollment requests for online parent accounts until November 1! If you haven't heard, our management team recently introduced a new, convenient way for you to pay for your student's lunches, camping and class trips, as well as to make any donations.
Collecting these funds with cash and checks has been a thorn in the side of charter schools for years. Money gets lost, and reconciling and depositing thousands of dollars also takes up hours of our time and significant resources.
Summit has worked hard over this past year to develop a new, convenient, and easy to use online system where you can make payments directly to Summit by credit card.
Please note that this is an optional program. Families can continue paying by cash or check if so desired. But getting as many families to sign up for this program as possible opens up more time for our staff to spend on tasks that will benefit students!
To enroll, please fill out and return the form by November 1.

College Night - 10th Graders
10th Grade Students and Families - Please join us for our 10th Grade College Night on Thursday, October 24 at 6:30pm. This will be held on the Tahoma campus located at 14271 Story Road. This night is specifically for the 10th grade class and will give families important information about what both students and families can do to start planning for college. You will learn what to expect this year, how to plan for next summer and how Rainier is supporting your student on the path to college.

Maria Sousa, Facilities Chairperson
Workday - Saturday, October 26
There will be a Facilities Workday to take care of some of the Facilities issues on our campus. We plan to:
* Repair a stall door in the girls' bathroom
* Attach a larger tarp over the lunch service area

* Repair building vent at base of teachers' lounge building
* Weed front entry path garden
* Take out old playground structures near entry
Bring work gloves, sunscreen, and please check the link below for supplies we need and tools we would like to borrow for the day.
We want to make sure we have enough people to help, so please sign up to let us know you're coming. Students are welcome to participate! Sign up to volunteer here.

Expeditions
Visual Arts
Congratulations to 9th grader, Nadia Toribio, who won art supplies in the Visual Arts (Painting and Drawing) class. Her Haunted House artwork was voted best in the class! This is Nadia's first art class, but she plans to use her prize to continue creating works of art.
Expeditions Visual Arts teacher Rebecca Wyke is a professional illustrator and graphic designer and just received her Masters in Education. She rotates through Summit Rainier, Shasta, Everest and Summit Prep throughout the Expeditions year.
More pictures from the Visual Arts class are online here.
Drama
Drama students have been learning how to use their faces and bodies to express emotion. This week students learned about pantomime - and practiced getting their stories across to the audience without words. In other exercises, students had to prepare a monologue, as if auditioning for a role and deliver it to their classmates, who acted as the producers. Drama teacher Nick Patton helps students differentiate between criticism and offering suggestions for changes in the performances. With coaching, Isaac Magdaleno asked Jowie Panaligan to "try it with larger emotional choices." All of the students show incredible bravery in presenting their performances.
For first time drama student, Reneé Broussard, this class has taught her how to compose herself before performing. Joshua Franco-Lee explained how the breathing techniques they practiced in class helped him relax. Joshua Garcia took a drama class last year at a different high school, but he says that Rainier's program with intensive weeks of Exhibition classes is much better and since classes are for the whole day, they can explore ideas more in depth.
A selection of photos from the Drama classes are online here.
Students will return to the regular academic schedule next week for the rest of the semester. The next Expeditions session will be January 21-31, 2014.
