Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

We are now in our second session of Expeditions. The students are hard at work in their elective classes. All the Juniors are enrolled in a College Readiness class and are working on building their College Knowledge including doing college research, setting realistic expectations, and doing individual research on the "Right Fit". Other students are hard at work fulfilling their Visual Arts requirement in painting and drawing classes, drama or other classes such as Slam Poetry.

Even though these two weeks are a break from the regular academic schedule, students are expected to complete a minimum of two hours of Personalized Learning Time each day during Expeditions. Students should be using this time to make sure that they are progressing in their academics. During Expeditions, teachers will be available in our Support Structures. Students can take assessments, catch up on projects, and handle whatever other work needed. Please note that some teachers are requiring mandatory PTL attendance to catch up on playlists - students, you know if this applies to you.

Here is the schedule during Expeditions:

Before School PLT (same as normal):
7:45-8:45am Monday - Friday
9th - room 1211
10th - room 1209
11th - room 1213

Teachers available:
Mondays - History
Tuesdays - English
Wednesdays - Spanish
Thursdays - Math
Fridays - Science

After School PLT (1 hour earlier):
3-4pm Monday & Wednesday (may extend after 4pm if needed)

Subject rooms:
History - 1209
English - 1212
Spanish - 1211
Math - 1210
Science - 1213
Whited/RSP - 1214

Expeditions is a great time to get caught up on work and also to move forward with playlists. We hope students will take advantage of the teacher help before and after school, in addition to working at home.

Respectfully,

Pamela Lamcke, Principal

Lia Pinelli, Assistant Director

ComedySportz

 Fundraising Team

null

We want to thank everyone who attended and helped organize the fall fundraising event, Comedy Sportz on Saturday evening. We didn't sell as many tickets as we had hoped, but for those who attended, it was a blast! The improv actors made the show so funny and interactive; it was truly a memorable experience. We also enjoyed the delicious snacks before the show and during intermission, so thank you to everyone who helped with the food. This money goes directly into our academic program for students. As always, thank you for your support and generosity.

Recruitment for Fall 2014
Lia Pinelli, Assistant Director

We are already planning for next fall's incoming class of students. Our best method of recruitment is word of mouth from current families. If you can help, please contact Lia Pinelli.

Recruitment Open Houses
There will be Summit San Jose Recruitment Open Houses on Tuesday, November 5 and December 3 at 6:30pm on the Rainier campus. Be sure to tell your friends and family to get their applications in by the February 28 deadline to have the highest chance of acceptance.
College Corner

College Visit - Gonzaga University

Gonzaga University will have representatives visiting the Rainier campus on Tuesday, October 22 at 3pm. This is an excellent opportunity for students to meet with college representatives and find out about the school.

Students, even if this is not your first choice school, you can use this opportunity as a "practice" session for talking with other representatives. Here is a list of questions that you might want to consider asking as you determine your "right fit" college.

College Night for 10th Grade

We'll be holding a College Information Night for all  Rainier 10th grade students and their families on the Tahoma campus located at 14271 Story Road on Thursday, October 24 at 6:30pm. This night is specifically for the 10th grade class and will give families important information about what both students and families can do to start planning for college. You will learn what to expect this year, how to plan for next summer and how Rainier is supporting your student on the path to college.

LEDA (Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America)

This organization searches the nation to recruit approximately 60 students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, currently underrepresented in our nation's top colleges, universities and ultimately, leadership sectors. The Aspects of Leadership Summer Institute is held annually at Princeton University and is an intensive seven week program including leadership study, writing instruction, standardized test preparation and college advising. The deadline for 11th graders to apply is October 31. More information at their website. Mr. Avarca is available to guide you through the process.

Workday - Saturday, October 26

There will be a Facilities Workday to take care of some of the Facilities issues on our campus. We plan to:

*   Repair a stall door in the girls' bathroom

*   Attach a larger tarp over the lunch service area

*   Build a cage/box to protect the drip irrigation timer/backflow from vandalism

*   Repair building vent at base of teachers' lounge building

*   Weed front entry path garden

Bring work gloves, sunscreen, and please check the link below for supplies we need and tools we would like to borrow for the day.

We want to make sure we have enough people to help, so please sign up to let us know you're coming. Students are welcome to participate! Sign up to volunteer here.

Annual Fund Drive

We are asking each family to donate or fundraise $400 or more per student for this school year. All donations to Summit are tax deductible. Your annual donation is a small price for what a Summit education includes for our children, such as new Chromebooks (laptop computers) for every student, the myriad Expedition classes throughout the year, SAT/ACT preparation, college readiness courses and testing, the Spring study trip-all of which would cost well over $3,500 per student if we had to pay for them individually.

We need 100% participation in our annual fund drive. If a single payment of $400 is not possible at this time, please indicate your preference in making installments to fit your budget.  Please complete and return the commitment form to the office.
Stanford Splash

Splash is a program that brings high school and middle school students to Stanford's campus for a two day learning extravaganza. Classes are taught by Stanford undergraduates, graduate students, and other community members.

The next Splash is November 2-3. Registration starts October 18 and needs to be completed by October 23. Cost is just $40 for the weekend. For more information, see this website.
