Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

We are pleased to share both a short-term and long-term facility update with our community. We continue to work with East Side Union High School District to address both the current short-term needs of our site, as well as a long-term facility plan. Last week, Ms. Lamcke, Mr. Richards, and Mr. Arambula met with the Superintendent and both Assistant Superintendents. We had a productive meeting, and are pleased to share the results with you.

The school district would like to negotiate a long-term lease for Rainier to stay at our current location on Mount Pleasant's campus. We are excited about the benefits of this - we can continue to improve our campus this year, and we will have the stability of a set facility for the next few years. We are continuing to explore additional options for a long-term facility, including looking for land where we may be able to build a facility for both Rainier and Tahoma. While this is our ideal plan, we have had little success finding anything suitable in East San Jose. We will continue our search, but are glad the district is providing us with another option.

In order to secure this long-term lease through the school district, we need your help! As you know, we have a one-year lease for the current school year. In order to apply for a new lease, we must reapply to East Side Union High School District through Proposition 39. Part of our application is that we must prove that we will have enough students to fill the space next year. On Friday, each student received a bright orange Intent to Enroll form from their mentor. Our goal is to receive 100% of these forms completed and signed by this Friday, October 11th. Each mentor group that turns in 100% by Friday will earn an ice cream party, and, if the entire school turns in 100% by Friday, we will earn a free dress day on Monday, October 14th. Please do your part and make sure your completed form is turned in. Forms are also available online in English and Spanish.

We are also continuing to negotiate with the district about our current facilities concerns, in particular the bathroom and water issues. At this point, the district would like to wait to secure a long-term agreement before making these major improvements to our campus. We will continue to work with them to agree on a timeline that works for all of us.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Lamcke.

Respectfully,

Pamela Lamcke, Principal

Lia Pinelli, Assistant Director

Not comedy about sports, but comedy AS a sport! ComedySportz is the award winning interactive comedy show where two teams of "act-letes" compete for audience laughs and points while improvising scenes, games, operas and musicals based on audience suggestions. A referee governs the action, calling fouls and keeping the match moving at a blistering pace. The audience is always a part of the interactive show, and sometimes even winds up on stage! It's clean, fast and fun for all audiences. The Silicon Valley's longest-running show, they've been named Editor's Choice by the Wave Magazine and Best Local Theatre by the Metro's Best of the Silicon Valley.

Expeditions

As a reminder, Expeditions will run for two weeks - October 14 through October 25. Dismissal is at 3pm during Expeditions.

Greg Ponikvar
Expeditions Executive Director

Expeditions Executive Director

Greg Ponikvar has worked with Summit Public Schools for the past 4 years as a founding History Teacher at Everest Public School. He received his Teaching Credential and Master's in Education from Stanford University, and has a firm commitment to the belief that a quality education is one of the greatest responsibilities our nation holds. Through the Expeditions Program, Greg hopes to empower every student to find the relevance of their education, expose them to real-world challenges, and help each one find a passion (career or otherwise) that will last throughout their lives.

Internship Partners Needed

This year during Expeditions we are offering a career class for Summit San Jose students and are working toward placing students in off-campus internships this year and over the summer. We are eagerly seeking partners - businesses and organizations of all kinds - that would be willing to host high school interns. Here is more information about the Internship Program. If you have a lead, please contact Expeditions Teacher-Leader Kathryn Hopkins or by phone at 415-609-5127.

Recruitment for Fall 2014
Lia Pinelli, Assistant Director

Summit Rainier and Tahoma are part of Summit Public Schools - an organization of public, tuition-free, charter high schools. Our schools strive to provide students with a small and personalized educational experience with guaranteed college preparation in a physically and emotionally safe environment. Hear our students, parents, and teachers describe why they choose Summit schools: http://vimeo.com/57639234

Recruitment Open Houses
There will be Summit San Jose Recruitment Open Houses on Tuesday, November 5 and December 3 at 6:30pm on the Rainier campus. Interested families can find out more about our school at these events. This is the first chance to get and submit an application for the 2014-2015 school year and to sign up for shadow events and tours. Be sure to tell your friends and family to get their applications in by the February 28 deadline to have the highest chance of acceptance. If you have current 8th grade students, they need to go through the application process. Siblings do have a preference in the Lottery, but the application is their ticket into the Lottery.

Recruitment Parties
We would also like to announce that Summit staff is available for attending Recruitment Parties. If you bring a group of five or more new uninformed families/students together, so that our staff can inform your guests about our school option, you can earn parent volunteer hours, student free dress pass and a $50 Visa gift card. This is a great way to share about Summit and help change our community one student and family at a time. There is a form in the office.

Flyers available
Please help us recruit our new class of Rainier Bulldogs. Please distribute and post these flyers in English and Spanish. If you can help post in your child's middle school newsletter (or other appropriate forum), or know of high school information nights at your child's middle school, we would greatly appreciate your help!

Current Openings
There are a limited number of immediate openings in our current classes. For more information or if you have questions, please contact Assistant Director Lia Pinelli or call (408) 831-3104.

We are asking each family to donate or fundraise $400 or more per student for this school year. All donations to Summit are tax deductible. Your annual donation is a small price for what a Summit education includes for our children, such as new Chromebooks (laptop computers) for every student, the myriad Expedition classes throughout the year, SAT/ACT preparation, college readiness courses and testing, the Spring study trip-all of which would cost well over $3,500 per student if we had to pay for them individually.

We need 100% participation in our annual fund drive. If a single payment of $400 is not possible at this time, please indicate your preference in making installments to fit your budget.  Please complete and return the commitment form to the office.
