Message from the Directors

Dear Rainier Families,

PLP Meetings - September 27-28
Each student, along with their parents and mentor, will be participating in a PLP (Personalized Learning Plan) meeting. Meetings will take place as scheduled with the Academic Mentor that your student meets with each Friday during PLT time. We are looking forward to having every family involved in this important process.

In order to facilitate the meetings, there will be no regular classes held on Thursday and Friday, September 26-27. Classes will resume on Monday, September 30.

2013 Fundraising Campaign
Fundraising letters were distributed to students on Friday. We are asking for 100% participation from all our Summit Rainier families. You have the option to contribute the full amount now, pay in your choice of installments and/or participate in other fundraising events to go toward your family's commitment. Please complete the Commitment Form and turn it in no later than September 30, regardless of whether you are able to donate right now.

Respectfully,

Pamela Lamcke, Principal

Recruitment Open Houses & Parties

Our first Summit San Jose Recruitment Open House is coming up on Tuesday, October 1 (with additional events on November 5 and December 3) at 6:30pm on the Rainier campus. This will be the first opportunity to get and submit an application for the 2014-2015 school year and to sign up for shadow events and tours. Be sure to tell your friends and family to get their applications in early to have the highest chance of acceptance.

We would also like to announce that Summit staff is available for attending Recruitment Parties. If you bring a group of five or more new uninformed families/students together, so that our staff can inform your guests about our school option, you can earn parent volunteer hours, student free dress pass and a $50 Visa gift card. This is a great way to share about Summit and help change our community one student and family at a time. There is a form in the office.

Not comedy about sports, but comedy AS a sport! ComedySportz is the award winning interactive comedy show where two teams of "act-letes" compete for audience laughs and points while improvising scenes, games, operas and musicals based on audience suggestions. A referee governs the action, calling fouls and keeping the match moving at a blistering pace. The audience is always a part of the interactive show, and sometimes even winds up on stage! It's clean, fast and fun for all audiences. The Silicon Valley's longest-running show, they've been named Editor's Choice by the Wave Magazine and Best Local Theatre by the Metro's Best of the Silicon Valley.

QuestBridge College Prep Scholarships

QuestBridge's College Prep Scholarship provides opportunities to help outstanding low-income high school juniors prepare to apply to top colleges. More than 2,000 students will be selected as College Prep Scholars.

Did you know...

...a top-tier college education is possible for low-income students? Students from low-income backgrounds with strong academic records actually have significant advantages over other students in the college admissions process. Leading colleges are seeking to increase socio-economic diversity on their campuses, which means they are looking for students who have achieved academic excellence despite financial challenges.

...you can afford the education you dreamed about? Attending a selective private college can actually be less expensive than going to a community or state college. Financial aid packages at many leading schools cover 100% of students' demonstrated financial need.

Why should you apply?

The College Prep Scholarship provides opportunities to help qualified students successfully navigate the college admissions process. The awards include:

  • Full scholarships to summer programs at top universities
  • Individualized college admissions counseling
  • Invitations to the QuestBridge Conferences at Northwestern, Yale, and Stanford
  • All expense paid visits to college campuses

Who should apply?

If you are a high school junior with a strong academic record and an annual family income of less than $60,000, we encourage you to apply. Many past award recipients have also been part of the first generation in their family to attend college.

How do you apply?

The College Prep Scholarship online application is completely free and opens in mid-February. Before applying, you should familiarize yourself with the eligibility requirements.

ALL parents and students should take a look at the Student Resource Center section of their website as there are some excellent suggestions including preparing for college, applying to college and paying for college.
