Academic Insider

Pamela Lamcke, Principal

One of the enhancements we are excited to introduce this year is a daily time entitled "Summit Reads!" which will be a time in the day where students will participate in our version of a sustained silent reading program. Students will be in their mentor groups for reading time, and once a week they will have the opportunity to engage in rich discussions as a group about the books they are reading. The ability to read engaging and challenging texts is a skill that we want all of our students to leave us with and to date we have found this as an area of growth for many of our students.
After School PLT and Before School PLT
(Office Hours and extra teacher support)

Pamela Lamcke, Principal

What is PLT? PLT stands for Personalized Learning Time. Teachers will be available before school every day and after school on Mondays and Wednesdays for extra support.

Monday 7:45-8:45am - History
Tuesday 7:45-8:45am - English
Wednesday 7:45-8:45am - Spanish
Thursday 7:45-8:45am - Math
Friday 7:45-8:45am - Science

Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 4 - 5pm.
Physical Education Requirement

Even though Summit Public Schools do not have a physical education hour scheduled into our day, there is a PE requirement. Each student should complete at least 100 hours of physical activities per school year. There are three ways to accomplish this:
1. Play a sport
2. Participate in an approved outside activity
3. Bike, walk or actively skateboard to school
For options 2 and 3, students should submit a formal plan. Outside Physical Activity Forms  can be found on the PIVOT website.
Athletics

Coach J Bumagat, Athletic Director

Paperwork
All athletic paperwork and payment was due August 8. If there are students who are interested in participating, please contact Coach J at 408-688-1995 or at coachjbumagat@gmail.com.

Co-ed Cross County
Practices will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 4:30pm at the Mt. Pleasant track.

**For safety reasons, parents should pick up their students from the Rainier office after practice. If your child is taking the bus or walking home, please send a note to Coach J giving them permission to walk or take the bus home. Otherwise, parents will HAVE TO come pick up their child.

Girls Volleyball
Coach Steezy is the Varsity volleyball coach. Practice began on August 19 and will continue Monday through Thursdays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Tahoma's campus in the auditorium.

Coaches Needed
We are still looking for coaches for Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Baseball, and Softball. If you are interested or know anyone who is interested, please contact Coach J Bumagat or at (408) 688-1995. All coaches will need to follow all pre-screening procedures in order to be a coach.
Facilities Work Day August 24

Maria Sousa, Facilities Committee Chair

We will have our next Facilities day on August 24 from 8am-noon. We have a long list of tasks that need to be completed, so the more help we have that day, the quicker it will go. One of the items is painting the outdoor benches, so if you have paint brushes, paint rollers or drop cloths that we can borrow for the day, please bring them with you. We'll also be working on the landscaping and setting up shade. Please RSVP to come and help on this list.

Mentor Group Parent Leads Needed

Janet Amaro, Communications Committee Chair

This year with our expanding Rainier student body, we have 16 family mentor groups. These groups are one of the most important ways that students can feel a sense of belonging and connection to our school because students in the group will stay together for their whole Summit education. Each group needs at least two parent leads to serve as a liaison between the mentor teacher and the other parents in the group. At least one of the leads should be fluent in Spanish. If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, please contact Janet Amaro to find out more and see if your student's group needs parent leads. A Lead Coordinator for each grade level is also needed. Lead Coordinators act as a liaison between Summit Rainier administration and Mentor Group Leads.

The family mentor groups for each grade level are shown below. Ask your student if you are not sure to which group he/she belongs.

Summer Mixer Thanks!

Kathy Sambrano, Mixer Committee Chair

Shout out to all the volunteers that participated in the Summer Mixer. Great big thank you to everyone who volunteered to help organize, setup, decorate, cleanup, donate food, drinks, gift cards, decorations, signs, food utensils, etc. would not have been possible to hold such an event without you. From the bottom of my heart I really appreciate everyone who stepped up to help, especially our freshmen parents (you are awesome) and those parents who came to me during the event and asked, "What can I do?" I'm very grateful for your willingness to be available, THANK YOU!
