Camping Trip
Our Camping Trip is in danger of being cancelled, we still need more drivers to transport our students to the campsite and back. Please read more about it here.
Friday PLT
We are excited to roll out our Friday schedule starting this week. Fridays are focused on Personalized Learning Time and one-to-one check-ins with each student. Our goal for Fridays is that each student has the space to learn and practice content using the playlists on Activate in order to meet his/her individual learning needs. Students will be grouped with a mentor, who is also one of their teachers. The mentor will be checking in individually with each student over the course of the day to discuss the student's academic progress, set goals for the upcoming week, make plans for how the student will accomplish those goals, reflect on how the student is doing with habits of success (such as timeliness, responsibility, work completion, etc.), and work with the student on any individual needs. We believe that this dedicated time to work on individual needs and one-to-one coaching from a teacher will support our students in developing the skills to be self-directed learners now and in college.
Additional PTL time is offered before school and after school on the following schedule:
 | Ms. Lamcke and Ms. Pinelli |
Monday 7:45-8:45am - History
Tuesday 7:45-8:45am - English
Wednesday 7:45-8:45am - Spanish
Thursday 7:45-8:45am - Math
Friday 7:45-8:45am - Science
Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 4 - 5pm.
Students who are falling behind, need extra help or need to make up work should attend these sessions.
Respectfully,
Pamela Lamcke, Principal
Lia Pinelli, Assistant Director

Coming Soon - Expeditions
Soon our students will be embarking on their first Expedition experience! As a reminder, this is a time when their "normal" classes go on hold for a bit, so students can learn about other things we value as an organization: Health and Wellness, College and Career, Cultural Awareness and the Arts, and Leadership. These Expeditions are led by a mix of internal Summit Public Schools faculty and expert community providers.
Your students will be introduced to Expeditions and will be able to take a look at all the courses and workshops available to them. Across our entire organization, students have the choice of more than 40 different Expeditions to choose from! Then they will submit preferences and will be placed in courses for the year.
We are also so excited to tell you that we now have an Executive Director for Expeditions, Greg Ponikvar, who will oversee the entire program.
- During Expeditions, students will start school at 9am and it will run until 3pm.
- All students will be on the Rainier campus for Expeditions with the exception of 18 students will have the opportunity to take a Music and Sound Recording course at MACLA in downtown San Jose. This is a unique opportunity that MACLA provide for our students where students are able to use state of the art recording equipment in MACLA's studio space.
- As a reminder, ALL SCHOOL NORMS & EXPECTATIONS are the same during Expeditions times. We expect that every student will behave the same way as they have been during their core academic program.
We encourage all parents to talk with your students about his/her selections before your student submits his/her choices. We do our best to accommodate the top choices of each student but cannot guarantee that every student will be placed in one of his/her top choices. If you have any questions, please contact Pam Lamcke at plamcke@summitsanjose.org.
For more information, visit the Expeditions website @
If you click on My School Site and pick Rainier, there are class descriptions for all the offerings at the bottom of the page.

College Corner - PSAT Test
Pamela Lamcke, Principal
The Preliminary SAT or PSAT is coming up on Saturday, October 19! This is an important exam opportunity for 10th and 11th grade students. This exam serves the following three purposes: - A very high score (top 1 - 3% nationally) can bring scholarships through the National Merit organization, colleges, corporations, and other institutions for any 11th grade student - The National Merit organization has a separate scholarship program for any 11th grade student who identifies as "Black" or "Hispanic" (these are the words the organization uses) and who also scores well on the exam - Any score can help a 10th or 11th grade student understand if the SAT might be a better match college entrance exam as compared to the ACT. (In general, the ACT aligns better with college-ready skills and curriculum than the SAT, but for some students the SAT is still the stronger test.) We encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity. The exam costs $14 - students can pay with cash or check. Students who are on scholarship will have support to pay for the cost of the exam. If you sign up with us for the PSAT, you will take the exam at one of our schools in Redwood City. You can find more information about the PSAT exam, including other local high schools who offer the PSAT, on the College Board's website. Students who want to register to take the exam at one of the Summit Redwood City schools need to talk directly to Ms. Lamcke by the end of the day on Wednesday, September 4th.

Volunteers Needed
Janet Amaro, Communications Committee Chair
These are some of the volunteer jobs that we need filled.
Office help - can you come in on a regular basis to help in the office? We especially need help covering the phones during the lunch hour so that Ms. Martinez can do lunch duty. Please contact Ms. Martinez in the office (408) 831-3104 ext 5001 if you are interested in helping. Gardening - We need a volunteer to come to the school on a regular basis to water the container plants. Right now we don't have a nearby tap and we need to make sure that our plants stay healthy. Mentor Group Parents - Each student is assigned a mentor group. These groups are one of the most important ways that students can feel a sense of belonging and connection to our school because students in the group stay together for their whole Summit education. Each group needs at least two parent leads to serve as a liaison between the mentor teacher and the other parents in the group. At least one of the leads should be fluent in Spanish. If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, please contact Lupe Trujillo. The family mentor groups for each grade level are shown below. The ones in Red are the ones that especially need volunteers.

Fundraising: GiveWith.Target.com
This year, Target will give money to schools all over the country for one simple act: a vote. Our school needs just 25 votes to earn a $25 donation from Target. But that's only the beginning. For each additional vote, our school will get $1 more. So please remember that, although the gesture is small, the rewards are potentially huge. Go to GiveWith.Target.com to vote for Rainer Charter High School once a week through September 21 or until Target has given away all $5 million.
