Letter from Pace Setters' President:
Dear (Contact First Name),
 | | Kathy Harcharik |
Our October 2013 luncheon was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with each other and learn some facts about Cal Poly Pomona that we did not know. Our speaker gave us an interesting look at the history of the university through the perspective of the Arabian Horse Ranch.
Since we expanded our current board of directors to nine members, we've been busy planning additional Pace Setters events and services. In December we held our annual Kellogg House Pomona Open House, and were invited to attend an Angels game in September with alumni. Our Pace Setters scholarship is now a reality thanks to your generous contributions, and we will award scholarships to two students at our April 24, 2014 luncheon. CSU ERFA for the second year in a row will have its spring State Council meeting on our campus hosted by Pace Setters and Cal Poly Pomona. We also have a day at the Arabian Horse Show planned on April 6 with refreshments and a private tour for Pace Setters of the barns followed by the Horse Show. Look for more details about this event in the newsletter. Take a look at our web site at Pace Setters to see photos and videos of our activities.
Don't miss out on any of our up-and-coming events. If you are not a Pace Setters member or need to renew your membership, do so today! Go to the Pace Setters web site to find membership and activity information and sign up for our newsletter if you haven't already.
I look forward to seeing you at the many events offered for Pace Setters members this year.

A Message From the Pace Setters' Treasurer Betty Tracy
Scholarship News
A big THANK YOU to everyone who supported our first Pace Setter Scholarship! We actually raised enough to fund two $500.00 scholarships! The winners will be selected late March and announced at the April general meeting. As a reminder, the scholarships will go to an undergrad or graduate student who has a record of some campus volunteer involvement and a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. The recipient will be screened by the Financial Aid Office and selected by three Pace Setters, two of whom will be a Board member.

We will continue to seek donations as this will be an annual award. Your general donations to Pace Setters are always welcome and we thank all of you who help out in this way. If you want your donation to support the Pace Setter Scholarship then when you make your check out to Pace Setters/Cal Poly Pomona Foundation you must indicate "scholarship" on the memo line. We are looking into ways to raise funds in addition to donations but in the meantime, we appreciate your participation in this effort.
Betty Tracy
Pace Setters Treasurer
Consider Joining ERFA
The Emeritus and Retired Faculty Association (ERFA) membership is highly recommended by Pace Setters. ERFA represents concerns that directly affect CSU retirees such as pension and healthcare benefits. They provide personal assistance and problem solve those issues, if needed. Upon joining, new members receive a 30 page Survivor's Guide, are eligible for a Grant Awards Program, receive current information on their website, and a quarterly newsletter packed with news, the ERFA Reporter.
Dues are between $5 - $10 per month and 15% is rebated to Pace Setters. You can join by calling the CSU-ERFA office at 818-718-7996 to request an application, or download an application from their website: csuerfa.org. We encourage you to join for your personal benefit as well as Pace Setters. Check out the CSUERFA website for more information.
ERFA Fall Meeting October 26, 2013) Highlights
Betty Tracy represented Pace Setters
1. Governor Brown has named Stephen Stepanek as the Faculty Trustee. This fills a position that has been open since spring 2013. The CSU Academic Senate is sponsoring legislation to ensure the continuous presence of a faculty trustee.
2. ERFA will be offering its' resources to be involved in revisions to the Master Plan. The Community College Chancellor is very interested in having Community Colleges offer Bachelor's degrees. ERFA does not support that idea.
3. CALPERS is considering publishing a data base of retirees. ERFA opposes this. See more information on the Pace Setter website link.

Pace Setters is having an election for board members
May 1 is Deadline for Ballots
You may recall that last year we expanded our Board of Directors to the maximum allowed by the by-laws to nine, including the past president. The purpose was to allow us to expand our activities. In the process new board member terms were adjusted so that three-year terms are designed to rotate off in cycles.
This year the matter of replacing board members cycling off appears to be less complicated. We have one spot opening up as Art Parker (Pace Setters Vice President) is finishing his term. In the past we have put one person on the ballot per opening. Art is willing to continue on the board and so we have put his name on the ballot.
To be counted, ballots must be received by May 1. If you have any questions, please email Pace Setters.

Pace Setters joins the 75 Year Celebration
While we are reviewing the 75 -year history of our university, it might be of interest to also take a look at the history of our Cal Poly Pomona Pace Setters. There are some still -active Pace Setters members who were employed on this campus when Dr. Julian McPhee was our first president. Although his headquarters were on the San Luis Obispo campus, Dr. McPhee made regular trips here to attend business or social functions. Sit down sometime with any of the "first -timers" and you'll surely hear some interesting tales. The real credit for the creation of Pace Setters goes to Dr. Hugh 0. LaBounty, Cal Poly's third president (1977-1991). According to a copy of a letter in our Pace Setter archives, we read, "... The idea of what became Pacesetters (original spelling) was the brainchild of Dr. Hugh 0. LaBounty when he was President of Cal Poly Pomona. He chose Dr. Harwood to implement the concept. Ed did so, and became the Pace Setters' first president.... " The letter was written by Dr. Jack Fulbeck. He and Dr. Harwood were highly -respected professors in the English and Modern Languages Department.
Here are some quotes from other items in our archives:
From Dr. Harwood: "Please note that the original idea - the germ - was Hugh's and that he pushed it on me without letting.... We have been meeting for over 7 years."
From correspondence that Dr. LaBounty sent to all employees on February 27, 1981: "... In an attempt to better serve your needs, and those of the University, I have decided to establish an organization for retired faculty and staff with Dr. C. Edwin Harwood as the interim chair. Many of you have demonstrated a sincere and continued interest in the affairs of Cal Poly and I believe the advice and contributions such an organization can make to the university are invaluable...." An invitation to a luncheon on May 18, 1981 was subsequently sent out by Dr. Harwood. The luncheon was held in the Walnut Room (faculty/staff dining room). Parking was provided and the luncheon was hosted by the president. Attendance totaled over 50 retirees. Another luncheon followed on October 14, 1981 and, so, Pacesetters was launched! Officers elected were C. Edwin Harwood, President; Jack Merrow, Secretary -Treasurer; Council members, Ted Canham, Virginia Foster, George Jenkins, Milo Lacy and Laurel Thompson.
Of course, the group had to have a name so at the October meeting several names were suggested. The top three were: Arabian Knights and Ladies; Kellogg Frosted Flakes; and (fortunately) Arabian Pace Setters. Dues were set at $5.00 per year and by June ,I982 the first newsletter, cleverly called, "P.S." was published.
The twice-a-year meeting schedule has endured. Many of the early luncheons were held at Kellogg West and some were catered at Kellogg House. The current Pace Setter group enjoys a fall and a spring gourmet lunch prepared and served by Cal Poly's own students at the Ranch Restaurant at the Collins Center of Hospitality Management.
In 1999, Dr. Fulbeck wrote to Pace Setters, "Like others, I am favorably impressed by the sophisticated group Pacesetters has become... I am confident that on future appropriate occasions - or perhaps on a special occasion - the trailblazers will not be forgotten." Before the death of Dr. Fulbeck and of Dr. Harwood, they and Dr. LaBounty were recognized and honored at a specially -planned Pace Setter meeting which was filled to capacity.
Faithful stewardship from Pace Setter members has continued for over 30 years and an expanded and enthusiastic Board of Directors is making plans for the upcoming year. There will soon be a student scholarship bearing our name and retirees will have opportunities to continue serving Cal Poly Pomona in a diversity of ways.

Pace Setter member for many years
and a former President.

Keeping Pace with Pete Dawson
Retired 1989, Management & Human Resources
RANCHO MIRAGE - Once a week, on Thursday nights, a small group of mostly nonagenarian men - the youngest is 89, the oldest turns 100 in July - gather for cocktails and conversation in the living room of Pete Dawson's home at Sunrise Country Club in Rancho Mirage.
"We're all good friends," said Ray Carl, the youngest of the bunch. "We all started by playing golf together. I find it stimulating to come here and meet with my friends."

The men started meeting weekly about seven years ago after one of their buddies, Paul Renius, passed away. As the years advance, the group has dwindled in number. More friends have died.
The group talks about death and the inevitability of losing another among them in the year ahead, but mostly, they revel in the camaraderie, laugh, share stories and tease the heck out of each other.
On a recent Thursday night, six of the remaining seven men enjoyed an hour of playful banter - infused with a couple of rounds of drinks - before heading over to the clubhouse for dinner.
Bill Collins, who served in the Army, was unable to attend.
"He's under the influence of a lady," Dawson said, laughing.
Carl, a Coast Guard vet, and Dawson, who served in the Army Air Corps, are the ringleaders. When Carl thought the group should have a name, he enlisted Dawson to come up with a moniker.
"We're the 'Devil's Rejects,' " Dawson, 95, said.
