JAZZ IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM
Celebrating the Musicians that are Keeping Jazz Alive!
Host, Rick Mitchell
Jazz in the New Millennium

Jazz in the New Millennium, which debuted on the AAPRC Network in October, 2015, is launching its second season. The one-hour show, hosted by veteran journalist, radio host and educator, Rick Mitchell, is making a significant contribution to jazz radio, as the program "celebrates the musicians who are keeping this great music alive and passing it forward into the 21st Century."

Jazz is, and will always be, a national treasure.  It is America's classical music, rooted in African-American culture, with international appeal.  It remains alive and vibrant today because of the artists who continue to perform, record and evolve the art form. Names we've known for decades like Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea and Sonny Rollins. And a younger vanguard, including artists such as Jason Moran, Esperanza Spalding and Robert Glasper. They are keeping the music alive by making it their life's work.

Each week, Rick focuses on a selected jazz artist, putting their work into historical perspective while also presenting their current recordings.  It's an opportunity to give a deeper listen, with Rick's guided tour and quotes from the musicians themselves, to artists whose work we may be familiar with, but perhaps not their personal stories.  Jazz in the New Millennium is a modern mainstream jazz program that also explores jazz artists' forays into other musical genres, from traditional swing and bebop to funk, fusion and hip-hop, as a part of their career journeys.

Artists to be featured on the second season of Jazz in the New Millennium this winter and spring include: Jason Moran, Wayne Shorter, Branford Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, Pharoah Sanders, Marcus Miller, Gerald Clayton, Chucho Valdes, John Scofield, Terence Blanchard, Roy Haynes, Robert Glasper and Joshua Redman. (Playlists for Episodes 1 - 5)

Rick Mitchell has been writing professionally for 40 years, primarily about music. He's authored three books, and written for numerous regional and national newspapers.  A radio veteran, Rick has hosted music programs since the 1970's, beginning at KBOO in Portland, and more recently at KPFT and KTSU in Houston. Jazz in the New Millennium currently airs in prime-time slots on WCLK-FM in Atlanta and KTSU-FM in Houston, the primary jazz radio outlets in two of America's largest media markets.

We love the mission of this show; to celebrate the predominantly African-American artists who in our lifetimes are keeping jazz alive and passing it forward.  It's a beautifully executed program that both entertains and provides a valuable educational context. We encourage stations that program jazz and African-American music to consider adding this well-produced hour to your schedule.

Bringing cultural & intellectual diversity to public media is our passion!
