"A RICH TRADITION" Modular Audio Series


 

A Rich Tradition is a modular audio series, encapsulating  the philosophies and adept use of language by celebrated African-American writers, artists, satirists, athletes and leaders.


 The series is hosted by Dr. Josef Sorett, from Columbia University's faculty of Religion and African-American Studies, and produced by Peabody Award winner, Jim Luce. 

 

Each module is 2:20 (two minutes, twenty seconds) in duration.

A Rich Tradition will be delivered as two Groups of modules.  In the first group, available to stations now:
  • Abbey Lincoln shares how being an artist saved her from the expected compliance demanded of women in her generation
  • Muhammad Ali waxes rhapsodic with self-affirming poetry, and discussed the importance of education
  • James Baldwin talks about how American slavery robbed cultural identity
  • Amiri Baraka in his signature Provocateur fashion compares Islamic terrorism with that of the KKK and white supremacists
  • Poet Gwendolyn Brooks shares the genesis of her poem "We Real Cool" published in 1959
  • Mahalia Jackson is remembered as one of the greatest spiritual singers of her day 
  • Malcolm X explains why he chose to assume "X" as his last name
  • Nelson Mandela recalls his first day in prison on Robben Island, and how critical reading was for surviving his 27-year ordeal
  • Richard Pryor does a comedic rendition of his encounter with the justice system
  • Jazz pianist and composer Randy Weston discusses how his upbringing provided the foundation for his artistic achievements, black culture in Brooklyn, and the many jazz artists who lived there in the1950's
