Understanding Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

The PRP process is fascinating from a technical and therapeutic standpoint, but in reality is quite simple. The patient donates a small amount of blood, comparable to a typical blood draw for lab testing. The blood is placed in a centrifuge for five minutes, during which time the red blood cells, platelets and white blood cells separate. The plasma is injected directly into the injury site. Plasma goes through a process called "activation" outside the body, to form proteins and growth factors. These substances are like liquid gold to an orthopaedic patient, as they simultaneously stimulate repair and reduce inflammation to reduce your pain.
