This Sunday, the first Sunday after Epiphany, we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord Jesus. Jesus' Baptism marks the beginning of His earthly ministry. It also confirms Jesus' divinity, when the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus as a dove and a voice from heaven spoke, "You are my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."

Epiphany: the Manifestation of our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, to the Peoples of the Earth

DID YOU KNOW......  that Epiphany once rivaled Easter in importance? The Feast of the Epiphany (January 6th each year) provided the setting for the early church to celebrate the various manifestations and revelations - or epiphanies - of Jesus' divinity. These epiphanies included Jesus' birth, Jesus' manifestation to the Magi (the peoples of the earth), Jesus' Baptism by John the Baptizer, and the wedding feast at Cana where Jesus turned water into wine.

By the year 813, and possibly as early as the middle of the 4th Century, the Nativity, Christmas, was celebrated as a distinct Feast Day around the winter soltice.

Our Church continues to celebrate the coming of the Magi on January 6 and Jesus' Baptism on the 1st Sunday after the Epiphany (this Sunday). We also celebrate the miracle at the wedding feast in Cana every Year C (of the Revised Common Lectionary - Episcopal edition). This year, we celebrate this miracle on Sunday, January 20th.

The season of Epiphany varies in length due to the movement of Ash Wednesday marking the season of Lent. The last Sunday after Epiphany this year is February 10th.
