SSO concertgoers will be treated to a soaring, eclectic galaxy of all-time classics as the orchestra presents Out of This World on Saturday, April 11.

 

The concert, led by guest conductor Paul Pulford, will open with three movements from Gustav Holst's The Planets:
Mars, The Bringer of War; Venus, the Bringer of Peace; and Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity.

 

Adam Despinic 

Then guest soloist Adam Despinic will take the stage, playing Felix Mendelssohn's much-loved Violin Concerto in E minor. Mr. Despinic was winner of the 2014 SSO Emerging Artist Competition.

 

The second half of the program will feature Star Wars Suite by John Williams. It will include Main Title; Princess Leia's Theme; The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme); Yoda's Theme; Throne Room and End Title.

 

The concert will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church Saturday, April 11, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Individual tickets (adults, $35; students, $20; children 12 and under, $10) are available online and at Fanfare Books, Blowes Stationery downtown, Festival Marketplace kiosk and Lyric Flowers in St. Marys. Tickets will also be sold at the concert.

William Rowson

William Rowson  named
SSO principal conductor

The Stratford Symphony Orchestra has chosen William Rowson to be its principal conductor.

 

Mr. Rowson will take the podium for the orchestra's first concert in the fall (October) and conduct all six concerts in the coming season. Read more

 

Laura Duffy

 

Laura Duffy is 2015 SSO Emerging Artist winner

Laura Duffy, a soprano, has won the SSO's 2015 Emerging Artist Competition.

 

Ms. Duffy, who is in her first year of the Doctor of Musical Arts program in vocal performance at the University of Western Ontario, sang Mi chiamano Mimi from La Bohème. Read more.
"Woodwinds" cushion concert May 3

The SSO's upcoming Family Cushion Concert will feature musicians from the orchestra's woodwinds section.

 

This special concert for the young and the young at heart will take place Sunday, May 3, at Gallery Stratford, 54 Romeo Street South, Stratford. It will run from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Tickets ($5 for children, $10 for adults, and $20 for a family) are available at Fanfare Books and Gallery Stratford.

Berthold Carrière
Berthold Carrière to receive honorary doctorate

SSO co-music director emeritus Berthold
Carrière will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree June 15 from the University of Western Ontario. Mr. Carrière was director of music at the Stratford Festival for more than 38 years and was musical director of the theatre department at the Banff School of Fine Arts from 1968 to 1970. He studied composition at Western from 1971-73.
