Winter 2013
Dear CIPS Members:
Caron Harrang, LICSW, FIPA

In this winter issue I am pleased to introduce a new feature of the News Brief in the Letter from the President. Those of us on the CIPS Board know Leigh Tobias to be a warm, capable, and engaging leader. We hope that the addition of this column will give all of our readers a chance to hear directly from her and what is of concern for the organization as a whole.

As in the last issue we note preparations for the IPA Congress this summer in Prague. Please note that CIPS will also sponsor a breakfast at the conference for members, candidates, and invited guests. See IPA News for details.

Also included is a special report on the just concluded North American Psychoanalytic Confederation Board meeting in New York City. NAPsaC is our regional organization corresponding to the EPF in Europe and to FEPAL in Latin America. We also encourage you to talk to your local society director (listed below) to learn more about NAPsaC and its efforts to address concerns shared by CIPS and each of our member societies.

And, as always, we have CIPS Societies News and an interesting story on collaboration between societies in the section we call, Inter-Society Dialogue.

I also want to recognize and extend a special thanks to Assistant Managing Editor Lisa Halotek for her work on gathering news from PCC and LAISPS and helping me in the many tasks associated with producing the News Brief.

Best wishes for a creative and productive few months.

Letter from the President

Leigh Tobias, CIPS President
Leigh Tobias, CIPS President
My warm welcome to all CIPS members and candidates in the cool of wintertime. I first want to let you know the outcome of our CIPS election:  Randi Wirth, of New York City and member of IPTAR, is our President-Elect; Terrence McBride, of Los Angeles and LAISPS, is our Secretary-Elect-actually our Vice-President-Elect. The CIPS Societies have voted to change the position of Board Secretary to Board Vice President as that title more accurately represents the position and responsibilities. The next News Brief will have interviews with both new officers so you can get to know them better.

I want to also let you know that the change that was made among the CIPS societies to disband the CIPS participation on the NAPsaC Board, and instead have each of our Independent Societies send their own representative and alternate (if desired) to the NAPsaC Board meeting, is working very well. The representatives learn more directly what is going on at the NAPsaC level, and the Board knows each of our societies more closely as well. It has been a good-governance decision. It also gives the CIPS Board an opportunity for a face-to-face meeting following the NAPsaC meeting, which has been useful. Look for a recap of the NAPsaC meeting in this edition of the News Brief (below).

Our book series and teleconference courses continue to provide welcome opportunities for CIPS authors to write and teach. The teleconference series is strong and not only promotes thoughtful psychoanalytic discussions, but serves to connect members who live in different cities, promoting collegiality, professional development, and a referral sources.

CIPS Societies voted two years ago to join the Mental Health Liaison Group (MHLG), a group of now 37 different mental health groups who advocate for mental health issues in Washington, DC. CIPS does not sign every call for support, but the CIPS Board reviews the issues and a vote is taken whether to support a particular action item or not. Lawyer and lobbyist James Pyles is our link in the District to public policy issues. His legal expertise in this area has proved to be an invaluable source of information and advice regarding constructive action for the CIPS Board.

The CIPS Board continues to put out a call for those members and candidates who would like to be more involved at the Board level:

We are looking for someone to oversee our website and its many levels of information.
We are looking for a recording secretary alternate to learn the ropes from Marilyn Rifkin who serves as our current secretary.
We also welcome reporters to the News Brief, keeping us informed of activities and issues in your Institutes and Societies, so we may all keep informed and connected.
We also invite anyone interested in listening-in to our Board teleconferences, held the third Sunday of each month.

We further invite anyone interested in becoming a Board Director to let us know of your interest.

My best to all of you,

Leigh Tobias, CIPS President

"Facing The Pain: Clinical Experience and the Development of Psychoanalytic Knowledge"

The IPA will be holding their 48th Congress from July 31 to August 3, 2013 at the Hilton Prague, Czech Republic. This Congress will focus on how the psychoanalytic process is gradually transformed from the analyst's initial and inchoate conceptualizations to more coherent and polished theories that can be communicated and possibly investigated by empirical methods. Congress activities will include work groups, small discussion groups, individual papers, panels, posters, meet the analyst/author sessions and films. Additional information  available at www.ipa.org.uk

Special Note: CIPS will host a welcome breakfast for all CIPS members, candidates, and invited guests at the IPA Congress in Prague. The breakfast will be held Friday, August 2, 2013 from 7:00 to 8:00 AM in the Chez Louis Salon at the Prague Hilton and conference site. Please join us and feel free to bring colleagues who may be interested in learning about CIPS.

North American Psychoanalytic Confederation (NAPsaC) News

NAPsaC Officers: Maureen Murphy (Chair); TBA (Secretary); TBA (Treasurer)

Board of Directors: Martin Gauthier (CPS), Caron Harrang (NPS), Peggy Porter (LAISPS), Phyllis Sloate (IPTAR), Mark Smaller (APsaA), Leigh Tobias (PCC), Joann Turo (CFS)

Alternate Directors: Dana Blue (NPS), Andrew Brook (CPS), Beth Kalish (LAISPS), Marilyn Rifkin (IPTAR), Charles Spezzano (PINC), Joann Turo (CFS) Randi Wirth (IPTAR) Andrea Kahn (PCC)

The North American Psychoanalytic Confederation, or NAPsaC, is a confederation of IPA component groups, formed in 2003 to enable the North American societies of the IPA to communicate with each other, to collaborate with each other on projects of mutual interest, and to facilitate decision-making by the component groups of North America in response to the administrative and governance requirements of the IPA.

The board met from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the elegant Waldorf Astoria in midtown Manhattan for its annual face-to-face meeting. This was the final meeting of the 2010/2012 administration which included the following officers: Robert (Bob) Pyles (Co-Chair), Warren Procce (Co-Chair), Rick Perlman (Secretary), and for the past year, David Falk (Treasurer). This administration had major organizational achievements. Under their leadership the directors were able to approve bylaws at the face-to-face last year (January 2012). An ad hoc committee chaired by Leigh Tobias (PCC) then worked with an attorney to secure non-profit status for the organization. This will permit NAPsaC to establish a bank account (rather than relying on APsaA to manage its funds) and engage in meaningful discussion about organizational goals and related actions.

Also, during this same time frame, after much discussion on the CIPS Board, it was decided that we would disband as an organization for the purposes of representation on the NAPsaC board and allow each member society to send its own director and alternate. This was done to obtain voting parity with the other independent IPA-affiliated societies (PINC in San Francisco and the Contemporary Freudian Society in New York City) and to have a stronger voice on the NAPsaC Board. Previously, CIPS sent two representatives to the Board. This change in the composition of the board had a very positive effect in helping to create a "work group" as evidenced by the aforementioned changes.

With these accomplishments in mind, one of the primary agenda items this year was to establish a rotation system for the NAPsaC Chair. Through a random drawing of member society names, it was determined that PINC (Maureen Murphy or whom ever her society selects to serve) will chair for the next two years (January 2013 - January 2015), effective at the close of this meeting, followed by APsaA, then by the Contemporary Freudian Society, then by the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society, then by IPTAR, then by LAISPS, then by NPS, and finally by PCC. Maureen as (presumed) Chair has the prerogative to choose officers from her local society or from the NAPsaC board to serve as Co-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. We congratulate Maureen, who is also a Direct Member of CIPS, on her new role and look forward to working with her during her administration.

Other changes to the composition of this board include Mark Smaller who became the primary director representing APsaA, replacing Robert Pyles. Joann Turo (Contemporary Freudian Society) also became the primary director replacing Liz Fritsch who completed her term at this meeting.

Publication News

Caron Harrang, LICSW, FIPA (NPS) had a film review published in the October (2012) edition of IJP entitled, "Psychic skin and narcissistic rage: Reflections on Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In." Unbeknownst to her, two other analysts (Alessandra Lemma and Domenico Di Ceglie) were inspired to write and submit reviews of this same film to the Journal. The collection of essays seems to demonstrate confirmation of a psychoanalytic way of perceiving and thinking that appears to hold across theoretical divides as well as variance in terms of what moved each author emotionally and what they chose to focus on in their respective papers.

The Psychology of Beauty: Creation of a Beautiful Self

Beauty is often an invisible yet potent presence in clinical work. The Psychology of Beauty: Creation of a Beautiful Self addresses the vital importance of beauty, its sources, and manifestations in everyone's lives-including psychotherapy patients. The ability to be mesmerizingly beautiful and beautifully creative, strivings toward mastering beauty, and wishes to be transformed are universal desires. During psychotherapy, patients manifest or defend against these forces. So it is striking that patients as well as therapists often overlook or dismiss issues about creating beauty in themselves. The Psychology of Beauty considers definitions of beauty, gender identity themes, and origins of beauty in the mother-infant relationship. It investigates ugliness, sado-masochistic beauty pursuits, evolutionary factors, and aspects of aging. The book highlights emerging clinical material which has yet to gain notice and suggests what analysts may be missing, and why.

Ellen Sinkman, LCSW, FIPA is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst and member of the Contemporary Freudian Society (CFS) and the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR). She is in the private practice of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in New York City and in Westchester.

Inter-Society Dialogue

The purpose of this section of the News Brief is to report on instances of collegial contact and sharing of ideas amongst the Societies that make up the Confederation (IPTAR, LAISPS, NPS, PCC, and the Direct Member Society) and between our members and psychoanalytic societies or organizations outside of CIPS. Normally we report on individual efforts. This time, we are pleased to report on a unique opportunity for inter-society exchange between a CIPS member society and the wider community of candidates and analysts throughout the United States.
