CIPS Book Series from Karnac

Caron Harrang

Dear CIPS member:

In this issue we are proud to announce publication of yet another volume in the CIPS Book Series, as well as an interview with book series founding chair, Meg Beaudoin. We hope to continue giving you a window into the back story of this momentous project through interviews in future issues, with some of the authors and editors who have worked on our current volumes; four so far!

Also in this issue are continuing reports of collaboration and learning from one another in the section we call Inter-Society Dialogue. If you or an analyst colleague is involved in presenting a paper at, for example, the upcoming APsaA or IPA conferences, please consider submitting a short summary to the News Brief. We all benefit in knowing what others in the Confederation are thinking and doing professionally.

We want to encourage our affiliate members to send us reports on your activities, including your experience, if you have participated, in any of our tele-conference courses (many of which are open to candidates).

We want to note several changes in the membership of the board and thank those who are stepping down. We also want to welcome those who are coming onto, or in some cases, returning to the board. Ellen Klosson has stepped down and is replaced by Kris MacGaffin (Direct Members Society). And, Beth Kalish is joining Peggy Porter as representatives from LAISPS.

Next month will be our last edition of the New Brief until September. If your Society has an activity occurring early that month, please send us your announcement (e.g. Save the Date) now so that we can include it in our June issue.

And please, feel free to contact either of us if you have feedback about the Brief or want to discuss an idea for an article.

The Book Series was founded in 2008 by a small group of CIPS analysts who thought the confederation should have its own publication footprint. The board appointed Meg Beaudoin to chair the book series committee. As is often the case when ideas take flight, the behind-the-scenes work of those who bring the project to fruition stays on the "cutting room floor" known to only a few. For this reason, the News Brief was interested in delving into the back story and learning more about the woman who managed to secure a contract with preeminent psychoanalytic publishing house Karnac Books. The following is the first in what the editors anticipate will be a series of interviews with editors and authors involved in the book series.

Inter-Society Dialogue

The purpose of this section of the News Brief is to report on instances of collegial contact and sharing of ideas amongst the Societies that make up the Confederation (IPTAR, LAISPS, NPS, PCC, and the Direct Member Society) and between our members and psychoanalytic societies or organizations outside of CIPS.

Robert Oelsner, MD, FIPA, conducted a series of seminars and

presented a paper at the New York Freudian Society's annual symposium on Understanding Primitive Mental States (March 17-19, 2011). The conference focuses on Kleinian and contemporary Kleinian theory and its applications to clinical work with primitive or early anxieties.
