Kumu Hula Michael Pili Pang
Kumu Hula (master hula teacher) Michael Pili Pang, MFA returns to Chicago for Hula and Craft Workshops and a new concept - a Hula Salon - March 8 - 10, 2013. 

Combining his western education with hula traditions, Kumu Michael is uniquely qualified to share his extensive knowledge with us.  He has presented at universities and colleges throughout Hawaii, North America, Canada and Asia.  Here's a video clip of one of his latest performances: Huliau 2012.

We are also very fortunate to have his student, Kumu Hula Keikilani Curnan from Kauai, who will add to the festivities!

The Art of Lei Making

Leis have many meanings in Hawaii.  They make a perfect gift for a loved one or as a beautiful adornment for yourself.  Make a head lei or special hairpiece with a variety of flowers and ferns at this workshop.  And sew your own fragrant plumeria lei with fresh plumerias flown in from Molokai.   $25 per workshop includes flowers to make a head and neck lei.

Kumu Hula Michael Pili Pang graces our first Hula Salon - a special evening of Hula inspiration, Dance, and a look at Trends.  Wear your finest Aloha wear and adorn yourself with lei.  Delicious refreshments will be served. Fresh leis are available for sale.

Pu'ili (Bamboo Rattle) Workshop
Friday, March 8th  6 - 9 pm  $30

Puili are split bamboo rattles, the rustle of which resembles "the notes of twigs, leaves or reeds struck against one another by the wind." (Unwritten Literature of Hawaii).  You will make one in this workshop.

Hula Kahiko (Classical)

This hula is the traditional ancient hula done to chanting and rhythmic instruments such as the ipu-heke, or double headed gourd. For experienced dancers.

Hula Auana is the modern  hula of Hawaii. All hula tell a story, and this hula is marked by melodious Hawaiian music and graceful hand and body movement.  For experienced dancers.

This class is aimed at beginners.  No prior experience required.  Basic hands and feet motions will be taught along with a simple hula.  Kumu Keikilani Curnan instructs.

The Spiritual Path of Hula

The origins of hula are spiritual.  It was part of religious ceremonies.  As the culture changed with time, hula also changed.  People who think that the entire world is sacred will not be surprised that many elements of the hula remain sacred and affect those who perceive it whether as dancers or as audience.  Contribution requested.
