Do I need to go to flight school to fly my drone?
Uh, NO.

WHY CAN'T YOU JUST SAY '5 MILES?'

I don't have an answer for that, but I can tell you that a nautical mile is based on the circumference of the earth, and is equal to one minute of latitude.

It is slightly more than a statute (land measured) mile (1 nautical mile = 1.1508 statute miles).
Nautical miles are used for charting and navigating.

(Wait, that's the answer, isn't it? Because we are charting and navigating.)
Below is the "official" language, but here's the bottom line: if you are flying your drone or other unmanned aircraft within 5 nautical miles of the airport, you need to communicate with the FMA tower in advance. Please call Airport Operations at 720-5186 and tell them what you're up to.

Your hobby won't be dictated by the local airport manager, but in some cases your flight request may denied. If you are told that you can't fly in a particular spot, it's likely for safety reasons that carry weight. You don't want to be in violation of interfering with a manned flight!

Okay, here's the deal. You do have some FAA rules to follow if your drone weighs more than 0.55 lbs. If you don't already know if you fall into this category, here are all the details along with examples that will help you determine if you need to register.

In fact, the FAA has a really cool app available for free that will help identify restrictions.

Here's FMA's take on the DRONE ZONE.
While there is no blanket prohibition on flights within 5 nautical miles of the airport, current law requires model aircraft (e.g., drone, UAS) operators to contact the airport and air traffic control tower before flight if you will be operating within 5 nautical miles (in any direction) of the airport. Notification to the airport and air traffic control tower must be acknowledged 24 hours in advance, at a minimum.

Operators are also required to contact the air traffic control tower no less than one hour prior to flight, in order to assure operation approval.

What if I'm further away?
If unmanned aircraft are to be operated more than 5 nautical miles from Friedman Memorial Airport, in any direction, there is no requirement to notify the airport. However, courtesy notification in the interest of general safety is appreciated.

For notification and information, operators should call Airport Operation at 720-5186.

Required information:
  1. Name of operator
  2. Operator's contact phone number
  3. UAS registration number
  4. Location of operation
  5. Date of operation
  6. Hours of operation (start and end times)
Operational Requirements:
  1. Operators will ensure that their aircraft remains clear of any/all manned flights.
  2. Operators will maintain line of sight visual contact with their aircraft at all times.
  3. Operators will insure that they operate their aircraft at no more than 400' Above Ground Level (AGL).
  4. UAS (e.g., drones, model aircraft) may not be operated within one (1) mile of any Friedman Memorial Airport approach or departure path.
  5. Operators will comply with any/all applicable CFRs (Code of Federal Regulations) and registration requirements as well as applicable federal, state and local regulations/ordinances.
  6. Operators must seek final clearance to operate from the FMA control tower, one hour prior to flight time.
Examples of reasons operations may be denied include (but are not limited to) potential flight hazards due to special use airspace, helicopter operations in the area, or extraordinary traffic conditions.
SUN ART EXHIBITION
Summer 2016 Art Exhibition Now Open at FMA
Featuring Selected Works by 26 Artists.

The SUN Airport Art Committee (SAAC) recently unveiled its third public exhibition of artwork at the airport terminal for the summer 2016 season.  The show - entitled SUN Art -- features artwork by 26 artists who live or create work in Idaho.  A wide range of media is represented, including painting, drawing, pastel, photography, and collage.  The call for artwork sought pieces that were representative of the area.
"Showcasing the talent of the many artists who live and work in Idaho is the primary goal of this airport art exhibition program," said Friedman Memorial Airport Manager Rick Baird. "The show underscores that the arts are a high priority in the Wood River Valley and that there is an abundance of artists in the region working in a wide range of media and styles."

The SUN Art exhibition was able to accommodate more work for this show - 33 pieces by 26 artists - because of expanded public space in the airport terminal.  The pieces were selected by an independent jury consisting of representatives of the airport and the Hailey and Ketchum Arts Commissions.

"The jury process was a challenging one, as we had over 100 different pieces to review," said Toni Whittington, who serves on the SAAC and oversaw the jurying.  "The quality of the work was outstanding, reminding all of us on the committee what a deep pool of artistic talent there is in southern Idaho."
An artist reception will be scheduled this summer, and brochures highlighting the work will be available at the airport throughout the run of the exhibition, June - October.
