Friedman Memorial Airport Authority
and Airport Staff invite you to
celebrate the dedication of the new

Todd C. Combs Building

Friday, June 10, 2016
5:00pm to 7:00pm

1616 Airport Circle, Hailey, ID 83333

It seems natural to honor him in this way. Todd loved working on the design of Friedman Memorial Airport and enjoyed spending time with all of the people he worked with. The airport staff and board will dedicate the new FMA Administration Building in his name, where his quite
presence will remain. Please join FMA as they honor Todd C. Combs, a kind, dedicated and thoughtful man.
VOLUNTARY NOISE ABATEMENT PROGRAM REVIEW COMMITTEE (VNARC)

The VNARC is about to embark on their second meeting. So far the committee has heard from Mr. Peter Kirsch of Kaplan Kirsch Rockwell who provided information on many of the issues involving noise abatement and runway use programs.

What's Next?

The next step for the committee is to review voluntary program flight paths into and out-of the Airport. Most were established years ago and require review.

Do you recall what their goals are?

The current goals for the FMA Noise Abatement Program are as follows:
    • Ensure that airport operations are compatible  as possible with the surrounding communities.
    • Educate, involve and engage the community and flying public about FMA's ongoing dedication to addressing noise issues at the airport.
    • Be committed to being the best possible neighbor
    • Respond to each concern and take action as appropriate.
    • Strive for continued success of the Noise Abatement Program.

AIRPORT CLOSURE!

Friedman Memorial Airport will be closed from 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17 through 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 19 to complete the runway sealcoating and repainting project.

THE SEARCH IS ON! A Succession Plan for Rick!
Last month we mentioned that after more than 24 years, Friedman Memorial Airport Manager Rick Baird is turning in his wings. Next on the horizon for Rick: retirement.

The official announcement reads: The Friedman Memorial Airport Authority (FMAA) in Hailey, Idaho is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time Airport Manager for the Friedman Memorial Airport. This position reports to the FMAA and is responsible for operations and administration of the airport in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.

Short-Term Outreach Deadline is May 13, 2016
A full position description has been developed and is available here.

WHAT'S EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT?
DE-ICING . . . the system is working!
The results are in! A few months ago, FMA began testing the holding tanks and soil in response to a letter from a concerned citizen. When they received the letter asking how the airport handles de-icing material and if it is a hazard to our water and soil, FMA dug in -- literally. If you need a recap, it was included our last On the Fly eNewsletter.

The final conclusion
The system FMA has in place is working as designed. The tank is retaining propylene glycol, and the storm drain/swale is treating the propylene glycol before entering the drywell.

A few recommendations resulted from the testing:
  • Pump the tank and recycle/dispose of the de-icing solution.
  • Institute a program to pump the tank regularly during de-icing season.
  • Alternatively, connect the tank to a sanitary sewer with a system to pump the de-icing material.

FMA's Drainage System
On the east side, water and fluid flows"overland" to a swale at the southeast corner
On the west side, fluid flows into the storm drainage system (follow the yellow brick road, or dotted line) from the north to the south.

All aircraft de-icing takes place on the north ramp (red circle)
The de-icing fluid is collected in trench drains, stored in an underground tank, and then discharged to the storm drain.

What did FMA test?
Four test were conducted:
Two samples were taken from the holding tank.
First when the fluid was still
Second when they shook it like a Polaroid picture (it's a song by OutKast that seriously makes you want to dance) and then tested it again.
Third from the drywell

Fourth from the soil

Hey Ya!
Hey Ya! (Shake it like a Polaroid picture)

TESTING RESULTS

SAVE THE DATE
Regular board meeting is June 7, 2016

See you at the Blaine County Courthouse at 5:30.
