SIZE MATTERS.

setting limits on plane size.
Did you know that Friedman Memorial Airport is one of only a few* airports in the country that has FAA supported weight limits for planes that land (and take off) on its runway? So what does that mean for our neighbors?  Well, the Gulf Stream 650 is about the Mack-est GA Daddy we'll see landing here for the foreseeable future.

What's the number you ask? It's a whopin' 95,000lbs. That's just enough to allow updated commercial uses but not enough to land the Titanic.

Take away: If your client gets a bigger better plane, they'll have to fly the little one to town. No really, this board worked hard to limit plane sizes so that our community could have a legal line to draw.

WHAT DO YOU SAY WHEN YOUR
buddies ask you to head to Whiskey's
Woah, I gotta go.

Yep, it's that time of year.  Get to the airport 2 hours early.

Check with your airline at least 4 hours prior to your departure.

In the event that Mother Nature intervenes in your travel plans, you will be contacted by your air carrier, who will provide you with information regarding alternative transportation to another airport, so that you will still arrive at your destination on time.

Ah, winter - we sure love that snow, except when it affects air travel.  Fly Sun Valley Alliance has teamed up with the airlines and Sun Valley Express to enhance the diversion busing program, including newer motorcoaches, helpful airport hosts, on-call drivers and more.

We continue to collectively work to make this experience as pleasant as possible for SUN air travelers. And most importantly, you do get to your destination! We are very fortunate here in Sun Valley - there are only a few airports in the US where airlines offer this extraordinary level of service for travelers impacted by weather.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT...
Transparency.  Well, there was quite a debate at the last Bellevue City council meeting about what's under the sheets, so to speak.

The city of Bellevue is undecided about whether or not  it will participate in a Freedom of Information Act request by City Councilman Craig Wolfrom.

The airport stands that they have been on the up and up and are willing to open the place up for inspection but locating and transporting a bunch of boxes full of paper isn't the best use of time or money for an unclear request.  All equals a lot.

CORRECTIONOkay, so maybe not a full inspection because there is a process with the FAA for that kind of thing.  It's called the Freedom of Information Act.  The point is, FMA has been completely open about the process and have been happy to answer questions.

With that being said, there is no record of anyone being denied copies of communication when requested.  Just Ask.

PLANE FACTS.
For those who want to know.

What does expansion mean-exactly?
  • FMAA's efforts to expand does not include larger planes.  In fact, they set a limit on the size of planes allowed on our runway.
    • CORRECTION: They = The FMA board and the FAA
  • Adding additional parking (for one to two additional commercial flights) is to bring the airport back to the capacity it had just before the required FAA construction.
There's way more air traffic.  NOT.
Air Traffic operations are actually WAY down.  FMAA is constantly making efforts to manage operations to benefit our community.  This was achieved by fewer flights but additional capacity. View the full graph, it's pretty interesting.
  • In 2001 year total operations were 50,858
  • In 2014 year total operations were 23,307
  • That's a 46% difference. I'll be jiggered.
