Are you making your list and checking it twice? We're here to help, with extended hours for holiday shopping - an extra hour each on Saturdays and Sundays, and weeknights until 8:00pm. You're welcome to order via our website 24/7 for in-store pick-up as well.

Volunteers from local community groups will be staffing our gift wrap station. This week, stop by and say hello to CCACE on Thursday, Jericho Road Project on Saturday, Gaining Ground on Sunday, and the Concord Chorus on Monday; have your bookshop purchases wrapped, and learn more about these groups!

Our shelves are bursting with items for everyone on your list - from board books for toddlers to New York Times bestsellers and that special title for a special someone. We also have calendars, journals, activity books, pencil puzzles, and jigsaws. Can't decide what to give? A Concord Bookshop tote and gift certificate is a smart "one size fits all" solution.

Craft? History? Cooking? Children's classics? Scroll down to see this week's newsletter picks and additions to our Signed Books Gallery.

The art of craft and creativity

Why We Make Things and Why It Matters: The Education of a Craftsman by Peter Korn

why we make things

In this moving account, we follow Peter Korn's search for meaning as he finds employment as a novice carpenter on Nantucket, morphs into a self-employed designer/craftsman of fine furniture, takes a right turn into teaching woodworking and design at Colorado's Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and finally founds a school in Maine: The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, an internationally respected, non-profit institution teaching design, furniture making, and related arts to over 400 students a year.

This is not a "how-to" book in any sense. Korn wants to get at the why of craft, in particular, and at the satisfactions of creative work, in general to understand their essential nature. How does the making of objects both reflect and refine our own identities? What is it about craft and creative work that makes them so rewarding? What is the nature of those rewards? How do the products of creative work inform society?

Korn is the author of several how-to books, including the best-selling Woodworking Basics: Mastering the Essentials of Craftsmanship and The Woodworker's Guide to Hand Tools

Maps document our history and shape our future

A History of the World in 12 Maps by Jerry Brotton

history of world

A fascinating look at twelve maps - from Ancient Greece to Google Earth - and how they changed our world.

Historian and cartography expert Jerry Brotton explores a dozen of history's most influential maps, from stone tablet to vibrant computer screen. This book brings maps from classical Greece, Renaissance Europe, and the Islamic and Buddhist worlds to life and reveals their influence on how we literally look at our present world.

The long road to our present geographical reality was rife with controversy, manipulation, and special interests trumping science. Through the centuries maps have been wielded to promote any number of imperial, religious, and economic agendas, and have represented the idiosyncratic and uneasy fusion of science and subjectivity. Brotton also conjures the worlds that produced these notable works of cartography and tells the stories of those who created, used, and misused them for their own ends.

Jerry Brotton is Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary University of London and a leading expert in the history of maps and Renaissance cartography.

Foodie fun!

Great Balls of Cheese by Michelle Buffardi

great balls of cheese

The first cookbook to bring cheese balls back into style - with contemporary flavor combinations and adorable designs too.

Updated for contemporary tastes, these cheese balls come in both savory and sweet flavors, like cheddar, blue cheese, and Buffalo wing sauce, or Bing cherry, rum, and pecan.

Many of the recipes, photographed in gorgeous full color, are in adorable shapes for all kinds of occasions, such as an Easter egg, Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas ornament, or a football for a Super Bowl party. Other designs are just plain fun, like the Nacho Cat, a Wise and Cheesy Owl, or one that looks like a pizza fresh from the oven.

There is so much interest in bringing old-fashioned foods back into style, and this is no exception. Perfect for food lovers with crafty flair or anyone who loves to entertain!
