For lovers of language and design

A Compendium of Collective Nouns: From an Armory of Aardvarks to a Zeal of Zebras by Jay Sacher

compendium of nouns

This illustrated guide compiles over 2,000 collective nouns and brings them to life in stunningly colorful, graphic artwork.

Chock-full of treasures of the English language, the diversity of terms collected here covers topics from plants and animals (a parade of elephants, an embarrassment of pandas) to people and things (a pomposity of professors, an exultation of fireworks) and range from the familiar (a pride of lions) to the downright obscure (an ooze of amoebas).

Pronunciations, definitions, etymologies, and historical anecdotes make this beautiful book an entertaining read, a standout reference, and a visual treat. Language lovers and art appreciators alike will be captivated by this gem, rich in word and image.

Danya Quixote has always loved two things: stories, and her pet pony, Sancho. But when her family's fortunes take a turn for the worse and her parents decide that they must sell Sancho, Danya, well, snaps.

She and her free-spirited best friend Pia decide to whisk Sancho away to Florida, where Danya's estranged grandmother lives. Danya is convinced her grandmother is sitting on a nest egg that could save Sancho, and so the two embark upon an epic trip along the majestic Mississippi River.

As Danya and Pia face crocodiles, Louisiana casinos, and a surprising instance of what looks like divine intervention, they learn about the true power of family, discovering that magic exists if you know where to look and that sometimes the real treasure we're seeking has been with us all along.

Author Ellie Rollins received her BA from the University of Washington in 2008 and now works in publishing. Her previous middle grade novel, Zip, is now available in paperback.

Family Trees: A Celebration of Children's Literature

Now through January 1

Now in its 18th year, gives Concord's renowned literary tradition a creative twist.  The Museum's galleries are filled with 38 fanciful trees of all shapes and sizes, decorated with original ornaments inspired by acclaimed children's storybooks and contemporary picture book favorites.

You're welcome to shop from the books in our window, and from the holiday display in our Young Readers section.

The exhibition's focus on children's literature makes Family Trees unique among the many holiday events in Greater Boston. Each tree serves as a canvas for the artistic creations of a dedicated team of volunteer decorators. Inspired by the storyline, the illustrations, the characters or setting of a particular book, the decorators let their imaginations take flight, much to the delight of visitors of all ages from all over New England.

Proceeds from Family Trees, organized by the Museum's Guild of Volunteers, benefit the Concord Museum's education initiatives.
