Greetings from Main Street!

We extend our congratulations to Eleanor Catton, winner of the luminaries 2013 Man Booker Prize for Fiction for her novel The Luminaries! At age 28, Catton is the youngest writer to win the prize; her first novel,  The Rehearsal, was long-listed for the Orange Prize. Catton was was born in Canada, raised in New Zealand, and studied at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

... the judges picked Catton's audacious take on an old form, the Victorian "sensation novel". She has channelled Wilkie Collins and Herman Melville and come up with something quite new.

The Luminaries, set in 1866 during the New Zealand gold rush, contains a group of 12 men gathered for a meeting in a hotel and a traveller who stumbles into their midst; the story involves a missing rich man, a dead hermit, a huge sum in gold, and a beaten-up whore. There are sex and seances, opium and lawsuits in the mystery too. The multiple voices take turns to tell their own stories and gradually what happened in the small town of Hokitika on New Zealand's South Island is revealed.

This week's newsletter highlights two new biographies and an anthology that will satisfy your hunger for food writing. Our kids pick is a subtle blend of jazz, the Big Apple, and friendship.

Additions to our Signed Books Gallery include new publications from Simon Winchester and Jo Nesbø, Diana Rodgers' Paleo Lunches cookbook, and selections from children's author Nancy Shaw.

When you're in our Young Readers section, be sure to look at our "tiny books" shelf. These treasures are only 3-6" in height, proving that great things come in small packages:

Alice Hoffman presents Survival Lessons

survival lessons

We are delighted to welcome Alice Hoffman to the Bookshop with her first book of nonfiction.

With Survival Lessons, one of America's most beloved writers shares her suggestions for finding beauty in the world even during the toughest times.

Survival Lessons provides a road map of how to reclaim your life from this day forward, with ways to reenvision everything - from relationships with friends and family to the way you see yourself.

As Alice Hoffman says, "In many ways I wrote Survival Lessons to remind myself of the beauty of life, something that's all too easy to overlook during the crisis of illness or loss. I forgot that our lives are made up of equal parts of sorrow and joy, and that it is impossible to have one without the other. I wrote to remind myself that despite everything that was happening to me, there were still choices I could make."

Wise, gentle, and wry, Alice Hoffman teaches all of us how to choose what matters most.

Much-anticipated biography of travel writer who saw the world firsthand

Patrick Leigh Fermor: An Adventure by Artemis Cooper

patrick

Patrick Leigh Fermor's enviably colorful life took off when in 1934, at the age of eighteen, he decided to walk across Europe. In just over a year he had trekked through nine countries and taught himself three languages, and his enthusiasm and curiosity for every kind of experience made him equally happy in caves or country houses, among shepherds or countesses.

A journey to the Caribbean, stays in monasteries, and explorations all over Greece provided the subjects for his first books. It was not until he and his wife had moved to southern Greece that he returned to his earliest walk. In these books, which took many years to write, he created a vision of a prewar Europe, which in its beauty and abundance has never been equaled.

Artemis Cooper has drawn on years of interviews and conversations with Leigh Fermor and his closest friends, and has had complete access to his archive. Her beautifully crafted biography portrays a man of extraordinary gifts - no one wore their learning so playfully nor inspired such passionate friendship.

Biography of the woman who created the Kingdom of Great Britain

Queen Anne: The Politics of Passion by Anne Somerset

queen anne

Queen Anne is history on a large scale - a revelation of a centuries-overlooked monarch.

She ascended the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1702, at age thirty-seven, and five years later united two of her realms, England and Scotland, as a sovereign state, creating the Kingdom of Great Britain.

By the end of her comparatively short twelve-year reign, Britain had emerged as a great power; the succession of outstanding victories won by her general, John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough, had humbled France and laid the foundations for Britain's future naval and colonial supremacy.

While the Queen's military was performing dazzling exploits on the continent, her own attention rested on a more intimate conflict: the female friendship on which her happiness had for decades depended and which became for her a source of utter torment.

At the core of Anne Somerset's riveting new biography, is a portrait of this deeply emotional, complex bond between two very different women: Queen Anne - reserved, stolid, shrewd; and Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, willful, outspoken, whose acerbic wit was equally matched by her fearsome temper.

To write this remarkably rich and passionate biography, Somerset, winner of the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography, has made use of royal archives, parliamentary records, personal correspondence and previously unpublished material.

Jazz, the Big Apple, and friendship!

Herman and Rosie written and illustrated by Gus Gordon

herman and rosie

Explore bright lights, swinging music and a friendship -- between a clarinet-tooting crocodile and a tune-belting goat -- that was meant to be in this picture book set in New York City.

Once upon a time in a very busy city, on a very busy street, in two very small apartments, lived...

Herman and Rosie.

Herman liked playing the oboe, the smell of hot dogs in the winter, and watching films about the ocean.

Rosie liked pancakes, listening to old jazz records, and watching films about the ocean.

They both loved the groovy rhythm of the city, but sometimes the bustling crowds and constant motion left them lonely ...
