This week's newsletter highlights a new collection of poetry from Mary Oliver, focusing on the human-canine bond; history set in 15th century Venice, exploring the world of the first modern publisher; and a "below-stairs" novel in response to Pride and Prejudice. Our kids pick is the new Daisy book from Caldecott Medalist Chris Raschka.

New in our Signed Books Gallery are Kevin Phillip's 1775: A Good Year for Revolution and the newest Ladybug Girl children's picture book.

Again this week, our community window spotlights the upcoming Verrill Farm Harvest Festival to benefit Emerson Hospital Pediatric Care.

Up next in our Fall Author Series is Carlisle resident Diana Rodgers, an expert in the Paleo field, consultant to CrossFit gyms, and author of a wonderful Paleo/gluten-free cookbook. New collection highlights Pulitzer Prize-winning poet's love of dogs

Dog Songs by Mary Oliver

dog songs

Dog Songs is a testament to the power and depth of the human-animal exchange, from an observer of extraordinary vision.

Threaded throughout Mary Oliver's many collections, there have always been dogs. Beloved by her readers, special to the poet's own heart, the dog poems offer a special window into Mary Oliver's universe. Dog Songs collects some of the most cherished poems together with new works, offering a portrait of Oliver's relationship to the companions that have accompanied her daily walks, warmed her home, and inspired her work.

Born in a small town in Ohio, Oliver published her first book of poetry in 1963 at the age of 28. Over the course of her long career, she has received numerous awards. Her fourth book, American Primitive, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984. Oliver currently lives in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

The story of the first "modern" publisher - history of 15th c Venice

Bound in Venice: The Serene Republic and the Dawn of the Book by Alessandro Marzo Magno; translated by Gregory Conti

bound in venice

A book about the beginning of the book as we know it - what's not to like? Bound in Venice is a lovely paperback original from Europa Editions.

A highly readable but erudite book, this is the compelling story of fifteenth-century Venice, at that time the mercantile and cultural capital of the world. There, the first genuine publishing houses open for business leading to an explosion of the written word and an unprecedented diffusion of human knowledge.

Among the innovators who are driving these new cultural enterprises, one remarkable visionary, Aldo Manuzio, a man credited with inventing the figure of the modern publisher, stands head and shoulders above the rest. Manuzio will publish the first printed editions of the Talmud, the Koran, the works of Erasmus of Rotterdam, and classics of Greek and Latin poetry and theater, bringing about a true revolution and the birth of the modern.
A "below-stairs" answer to
Pride and Prejudice

Longbourn by Jo Baker

longbourn

In this irresistibly imagined below-stairs answer to Pride and Prejudice, the servants take center stage. Sarah, the orphaned housemaid, spends her days scrubbing the laundry, polishing the floors, and emptying the chamber pots for the Bennet household. But there is just as much romance, heartbreak, and intrigue downstairs at Longbourn as there is upstairs. When a mysterious new footman arrives, the orderly realm of the servants' hall threatens to be completely, perhaps irrevocably, upended.

Jo Baker dares to take us beyond the drawing rooms of Jane Austen's classic - into the often overlooked domain of the stern housekeeper and the starry-eyed kitchen maid, into the gritty daily particulars faced by the lower classes in Regency England during the Napoleonic Wars - and, in doing so, creates a vivid, fascinating, fully realized world that is wholly her own.

Jo Baker was born in Lancashire, England, and educated at Oxford University and Queen's University Belfast. She is the author of The Undertow and of three earlier novels published in the United Kingdom

1775: A Good Year for Revolution by Kevin Phillips

kevin phillips signing

We had the pleasure of hosting Kevin Phillips for a presentation on his most recent book of history. 1775 considers the economic, social, and political climate of this year, and argues that 1775 is the watershed year of the American Revolution, paving the way for all that followed.

Mr. Phillips's talk was followed by questions and conversation with a very engaged audience. After signing books for those in attendance, he graciously signed more for our store stock.

We have signed paperback editions of 1775.

Daisy Gets Lost written and illustrated by Chris Raschka

daisy gets lost

"Raschka again demonstrates his gift for visually capturing a sweeping range of feeling and emotion, from the gleam in the squirrel's eye to Daisy's wide-eyed alarm as she realizes her predicament."
-- Publishers Weekly
starred review

With the same emotional intensity that he brought to A Ball for Daisy, Raschka has created a story that explores fear as only he can.

Any child who has ever felt lost will relate to Daisy's despair upon finding herself in an unfamiliar part of the park after chasing a squirrel. In a nearly wordless picture book, Daisy encounters the unease of being lost and the joys of being found.

Raschka's signature swirling, impressionistic illustrations and his affectionate story will particularly appeal to young dog lovers, teachers, parents and, of course, the legions of Daisy fans out there.

Chris Raschka has written and/or illustrated over 30 books for children, including the Caldecott Medal-winning A Ball for Daisy. His other books include Good Sports; the Caldecott Medal winning title The Hello, Goodbye Window; the Caldecott Honor Book Yo! Yes?; and Mysterious Thelonious
