Greetings!

Is it back-to-school time already?! Some of our neighboring towns are returning to the classroom this week; Concord Public Schools begin after Labor Day. Let's all make the most of these last days of summer break - we've enjoyed meeting visitors from around the world this summer, and will continue to extend a warm welcome as the seasons change.

A reminder that R. J. Palacio's Wonder is the "One Book, One School" wonder summer reading assignment at Concord Middle School. The book is available in our Young Readers section and on our bestsellers shelves. The novel is truly enjoyable and thought-provoking for readers in the middle grades and above (yes, even adults!).

This week's newsletter highlights the new novel from award-winning author Edwidge Danticat; two nonfiction books that are now available in paperback - one explains the significance and impact of the Higgs boson, the other is the definitive biography of Leonard Cohen; and a wonderful children's picture book biography of Henri Mattise.

New in our Signed Books Gallery is Claire of the Sea Light by Edwidge Danticat. Read more about this spell-binding novel below.

This week's community window highlights the upcoming Concord Farm and Garden Fair, which takes place the weekend of September 7-8. Ag Days farmer's market in the center of town is followed by Garden Tours, Kids Film Fest, and Farm-Based Activities around town on Sunday.

We're adding events to our Fall Author Series, which begins September 15 with Randall Kennedy and For Discrimination: Race, Affirmative Action, and the Law. See the complete list of events in our left sidebar; as always, if you're unable to attend an event, but would like a signed copy of the featured book, please call or email us to arrange personalization.

We look forward to chatting with you in the Bookshop -- when you come in to take a closer look at an item mentioned here, please tell us "I saw it in the newsletter."

Award-winning author's new novel embraces the magic and heartbreak of ordinary life

Claire of the Sea Light by Edwidge Danticat

claire of the sea light

Claire Limyè Lanmè - Claire of the Sea Light - is an enchanting child born into love and tragedy in Ville Rose, Haiti. Claire's mother died in childbirth, and on each of her birthdays Claire is taken by her father, Nozias, to visit her mother's grave.

On the night of Claire's seventh birthday, she disappears. As Nozias and others look for her, painful secrets, haunting memories, and startling truths are unearthed among the community of men and women whose individual stories connect to Claire, to her parents, and to the town itself.

Told with piercing lyricism and the economy of a fable, Claire of the Sea Light is a tightly woven, breathtaking tapestry that explores what it means to be a parent, child, neighbor, lover, and friend, while revealing the mysterious bonds we share with the natural world and with one another.

Edwidge Danticat is the author of numerous books, including Brother, I'm DyingBreath, Eyes, MemoryKrik? Krak! The Farming of Bones; and The Dew Breaker, a PEN/Faulkner Award finalist and winner of the inaugural Story Prize. The recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, she has been published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and elsewhere.

Signed editions of Claire of the Sea Light are on our shelves!

A doorway into the mind boggling, somewhat frightening world of dark matter - now in paperback

The Particle at the End of the Universe: How the Hunt for the Higgs Boson Leads Us to the Edge of a New World

by Sean Carroll

particle at end - pbk

What is so special about the Higgs boson?

We didn't really know for sure if anything at the subatomic level had any mass at all until we found it. The fact is, while we have now essentially solved the mass puzzle, there are things we didn't predict and possibilities we haven't yet dreamed.

The Higgs boson is one of our era's most fascinating scientific frontiers and the key to understanding why mass exists.

Now, Caltech physicist Sean Carroll documents the doorway that is opening - after billions of dollars and the efforts of thousands of researchers at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland - into the mind-boggling world of dark matter.

The Particle at the End of the Universe has it all: money and politics, jealousy and self-sacrifice, history and cutting-edge physics - all grippingly told by a rising star of science writing.

The definitive account of Leonard Cohen - now in paperback

I'm Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen by Sylvie Simmons

i'm your man

"The major, soul-searching biography that Leonard Cohen deserves . . . a mesmerizing labor of love."

--Janet Maslin, New York Times

Leonard Cohen is one of the most important and influential artists of our era, a man of powerful emotion and intelligence whose work has explored the definitive issues of human life. Acclaimed music journalist Sylvie Simmons crafts a portrait of Cohen as nuanced as the man himself, drawing on a wealth of research that includes Cohen's personal archives and more than a hundred exclusive interviews with those closest to him, and with Cohen himself.

Simmons navigates Cohen's journey and explores every complex, contradictory strand of his life and his influence. I'm Your Man is a deeply insightful portrait of both the artist and the man of extraordinary vision, spirit, depth and talent.

Step into the colorful world of Henri Matisse and his magnificent paper cutouts!

In a small weaving town in France, a young boy named Henri-Emile Matisse drew pictures everywhere, and when he grew up, he moved to Paris and became a famous artist who created paintings that were adored around the world.

But late in life a serious illness confined him to a wheelchair, and amazingly, it was from there that he created among his most beloved works - enormous and breathtaking paper cutouts.

This moving and inspirational picture book biography includes a note from the author, dynamic quotes from Matisse himself, and an illuminating look at a little-known part of a great artist's creative process.

Jeanette Winter is the acclaimed author/illustrator of many highly regarded picture books, including The Librarian of BasraMamaWangari's Trees of PeaceNasreen's Secret School; and Biblioburro. She lives with her husband, artist Roger Winter, in New York.
