Drop-in customer-led group discusses articles and essays in The Sun Magazine

Stay tuned for a list of our Fall events, which will resume after Labor Day!

Greetings!

Thank you for voting us the #1 Choice for Bookstore in the "2013 readers choice logo cropped Wicked Local/Concord Journal Readers Choice" poll! We're "wicked" honored to be selected!

Our best suggestion for cooling off in this heat --> visit our air-conditioned shop, browse to your content, select your reading material, then hunker down at home (with windows open for cross-ventilation), outside in the shade (with a refreshing drink by your side), or at the pool/beach (jumping into the water to cool off between chapters).

We've got a great selection summer reading for your beach bag, or materials for camp care packages; a few suggestions in this week's newsletter: Sam Kean's engaging pop science book about the mysteries of DNA is now in paperback; the complete poetry of Roberto Bolaño; literary historical fiction about the Borgia family; and a kids pick from award-winning author/illustrator Tomi Ungerer.

We have signed books from Daniel Silva - The English Girl, the most recent of his spy stories starring Gabriel Allon.

The SUN magazine discussion group will meet again on July 18. Watch our fall events schedule; a full line-up of author events resumes after Labor Day! You can get a sneak peek of what's on tap by exploring the sidebar of our website.

Held over for a second week, it's an encore performance of our community window display, "Books to Film." Take a look at some of the "star-studded" books that have inspired films. And, if you weren't happy with the film version, remember, never judge a book by its movie!

We look forward to chatting with you in the Bookshop -- when you come in to take a closer look at an item mentioned here, please tell us "I saw it in the newsletter."

Stories of science, history, language, and music, as told by our own DNA -

now in paperback

The Violinist's Thumb: And Other Lost Tales of Love, War, and Genius, as Written by Our Genetic Code by Sam Kean

violinists thumb pbk

In The Disappearing Spoon, bestselling author Sam Kean unlocked the mysteries of the periodic table. In The Violinist's Thumb, he explores the wonders of the magical building block of life: DNA.

There are genes to explain crazy cat ladies, why other people have no fingerprints, and why some people survive nuclear bombs. Genes illuminate everything from JFK's bronze skin (it wasn't a tan) to Einstein's genius. They prove that Neanderthals and humans bred thousands of years more recently than any of us would feel comfortable thinking. They can even allow some people, because of the exceptional flexibility of their thumbs and fingers, to become truly singular violinists.

Kean's vibrant storytelling once again makes science entertaining, explaining human history and whimsy while showing how DNA will influence our species' future.

Sam Kean's work has appeared in The New York Times MagazineMental FlossSlate, and New Scientist, and has been featured on NPR's "Radiolab" and "All Things Considered."

The complete poetry

of Roberto Bolaño

The Unknown University by Roberto Bolaño

translated by Laura Healy

unknown university

A deluxe edition of Bolaño's complete poetry.

Perhaps surprisingly to some of his fiction fans, Roberto Bolaño touted poetry as the superior art form, able to approach an infinity in which "you become infinitely small without disappearing."

The sum of his life's work in his preferred medium, The Unknown University is a showcase of Bolaño's gift for freely crossing genres, with poems written in prose, stories in verse, and flashes of writing that can hardly be categorized. "Poetry," he believed, "is braver than anyone."

Author of 2666 and many other acclaimed works, Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003) was born in Santiago, Chile, and later lived in Mexico, Paris, and Spain. Among his many prizes are the extremely prestigious Herralde de Novela Award and the Premio Rómulo Gallegos. He was widely considered to be the greatest Latin American writer of his generation, writing novels, story collections, and five books of poetry, before his death at the age of 50.

Translator Laura Healy received a Master's in Spanish from Harvard and is the managing editor of Harvard Review.

Literary history fiction follows the Borgia family

Blood & Beauty: The Borgias by Sarah Dunant

blood and beauty

By the end of the fifteenth century, the beauty and creativity of Italy is matched by its brutality and corruption, nowhere more than in Rome and inside the Church. When Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia buys his way into the papacy as Alexander VI, he is defined not just by his wealth or his passionate love for his illegitimate children, but by his blood: He is a Spanish Pope in a city run by Italians. If the Borgias are to triumph, this charismatic, consummate politician with a huge appetite for life, women, and power must use papacy and family - in particular, his eldest son, Cesare, and his daughter Lucrezia - in order to succeed.

Cesare, with a dazzlingly cold intelligence and an even colder soul, is his greatest weapon. Later immortalized in Machiavelli's The Prince, he provides the energy and the muscle. Lucrezia, beloved by both men, is the prime dynastic tool. Twelve years old when the novel opens, hers is a journey through three marriages, and from childish innocence to painful experience, from pawn to political player.

Stripping away the myths around the Borgias, Blood & Beauty is a majestic novel that breathes life into this astonishing family and celebrates the raw power of history itself: compelling, complex and relentless.

Sarah Dunant is the author of international bestsellers Sacred HeartsThe Birth of Venus and In the Company of the Courtesan

A brand new children's story from master storyteller Tomi Ungerer

Fog Island by Tomi Ungerer

fog island

A brand new children's story by master storyteller, Tomi Ungerer.

No one has ever returned from the mysterious Fog Island, but when Finn and Cara get castaway on its murky shores, they discover things are not quite as they expect... Will anyone ever believe them?

An imaginative tale of mystery and fear of the unknown by one of the world's most acclaimed children's books authors whose other works include The Three Robbers, Crictor, No Kiss for Mother, and Adelaide: The Flying Kangaroo.

Tomi Ungerer, born in Strasbourg in 1931, landed in New York in 1956 with $60 in his pocket and with a suitcase full of drawings. Overnight he became a star as a caricaturist, illustrator and children's book author and published more than 80 books in ten years. As a graphic artist he created advertising campaigns for Willy Brandt and The New York Times. In 1998, Tomi Ungerer was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustration.

The English Girl by Daniel Silva

Seven days

One girl

No second chances

Madeline Hart is a rising star in Britain's governing party: beautiful, intelligent, driven by an impoverished childhood to succeed. But she is also a woman with a dark secret: she is the lover of Prime Minister Jonathan Lancaster. Somehow, her kidnappers have learned of the affair, and they intend to make the British leader pay dearly for his sins. Fearful of a scandal that will destroy his career, Lancaster decides to handle the matter privately rather than involve the British police. It is a risky gambit, not only for the prime minister but also for the operative who will conduct the search.

You have seven days, or the girl dies.

This is the newest book in a series which chronicles the adventures of art-restorer and master spy Gabriel Allon; it is a captivating page turner.

books to film

Held over for a second week ...

Critics are raving ...

There are so many movies that are "based on" books!

Do you prefer to read the book first, then see the movie?

Or, does your interest in a book increase after a film version has been made?

Whichever your preference, we've got a large selection of books that have been made into films.

Come on in and browse the "coming attractions" (new fiction and non-fiction tables, and our special books-to-film display in the front window) and make your selection.

Then, retreat to the "concession stand" (your own kitchen pantry) and grab a snack to eat while you SIT BACK, RELAX, AND ENJOY YOUR BOOK!
