Our next event: Historical fiction

set in mid-1800s Nantucket

Thursday, June 20 at 7pm

movement of stars

Join us at the Bookshop on Thursday, June 20 at 7pm when we welcome novelist Amy Brill, with The Movement of Stars.

Inspired by the work of Maria Mitchell, the first professional female astronomer in America, The Movement of Stars is a richly drawn portrait of desire and ambition in the face of adversity.

It is 1845, and Hannah Gardner Price has lived all twenty-four years of her life according to the principles of the Nantucket Quaker community in which she was raised, where simplicity and restraint are valued above all, and a woman's path is expected to lead to marriage and motherhood. But up on the rooftop each night, Hannah pursues a very different-and elusive-goal: discovering a comet and thereby winning a gold medal awarded by the King of Denmark, something unheard of for a woman.

Ms. Brill will be introduced by Tracy Winn, author of Mrs. Somebody Somebody, a collection of linked short stories set in Lowell, and perennial favorite on our Book Group Selections table display.

A portrait of an era, via one woman's fascinating life

Queen Bee of Tuscany: The Redoubtable Janet Ross

by Ben Downing

queen bee of tuscany

An engrossing examination of a fascinating woman and her irresistible world.

Born into a distinguished intellectual family and raised among luminaries such as Dickens and Thackeray, Janet Ross married at eighteen and went to live in Egypt.

In 1867 she moved to Florence, Italy where she spent the remaining sixty years of her life writing a series of books and hosting a colorful miscellany of friends and neighbors - from Mark Twain to Bernard Berenson - at Poggio Gherardo, her house in the hills above the city.

Eventually she became the acknowledged doyenne of the Anglo-Florentine colony. Yet she was also immersed in the rural life of Tuscany: An avid agriculturalist, she closely supervised the farms on her estate and the sharecroppers who worked them, often pitching in on grape and olive harvests.

Spirited, erudite, and supremely well-connected, Ross was one of the most dynamic women of her day. Her life offers a fascinating window on fascinating times, from the Risorgimento to the rise of fascism. Encompassing all this rich history, this is a panoramic portrait of an age, a family, and our evolving love affair with Tuscany.

Author Ben Downing has published poems, essays, articles, and reviews in publications including The Paris Review and The New Criterion.

Three Strong Women: A novel by Marie Ndiaye

three strong women pbk

A harrowing and beautiful novel of the travails of West African immigrants in France, this is the story of three women who say no:

  • Norah, a French-born lawyer who finds herself in Senegal, summoned by her estranged father to save another victim of his paternity
  • Fanta, who leaves a contented life as a teacher in Dakar to follow her boyfriend back to France, where his depression and dislocation poison everything
  • Khady, a penniless widow put out by her husband's family with nothing but the name of a distant cousin in France

As these three lives intertwine, each woman manages an astonishing feat of self-preservation against those who have made themselves the fastest-growing and most-reviled people in Europe.

In Marie NDiaye's stunning narration we see the progress by which ordinary women discover unimagined reserves of strength.

Marie NDiaye was born in Pithiviers, France, in 1967; spent her childhood with her French mother (her father was Senegalese); and studied linguistics at the Sorbonne. She started writing when she was very young, and was only eighteen when her first work was published. In 2001 she was awarded the prestigious Prix Femina literary prize for her novel Rosie Carpe, and in 2009, the Prix Goncourt for Three Strong Women.

True story of a Nantucket doctor - now in paperback

Island Practice: Cobblestone Rash, Underground Tom, and Other Adventures of a Nantucket Doctor by  Pam Belluck

island practice pbk

A spirited true story of a colorful, contrarian doctor on Nantucket, a world-famous yet strikingly offbeat corner of America. Dr. Timothy Lepore often holds the life of the island in his hands.

Thirty miles out to sea, in a strikingly offbeat place known for wealthy summer people but also home to independent-minded, idiosyncratic year-rounders, Lepore holds the life of the island, often quite literally, in his hands. He's surgeon, medical examiner, football team doctor, tick expert, unofficial psychologist, accidental homicide detective, occasional veterinarian. When crisis strikes, he's deeply involved.

He's treated Jimmy Buffett, Chris Matthews, and various Kennedy relatives, but he makes house calls for anyone and lets people pay him nothing - or anything: oatmeal raisin cookies, a weather-beaten .44 Magnum, a picture of a Nepalese shaman.

Lepore can be controversial and contradictory. And he has unusual hobbies: he's a gun fanatic, roadkill collector, and concocter of pastimes like knitting dog-hair sweaters.

Ultimately, Island Practice is about a doctor utterly essential to a community at a time when medicine is increasingly money-driven and impersonal. Can he remain a maverick even as a healthcare chain subsumes his hospital? Every community has - or, some would say, needs - a Doctor Lepore, and his island's drive to retain individuality in a cookie-cutter world is echoed across the country.

Author Pam Belluck has been a staff writer for the New York Times for more than fifteen years. She served for more than a decade as national bureau chief, covering some of the biggest stories for the paper. She is currently a health and medical writer for the Times. She has won several awards, a Knight Fellowship, and a Fulbright Scholarship.

The Engagements by J. Courtney Sullivan

j court sull signing engagements J. Courtney Sullivan's most recent novel looks at four fictional couples - in storylines set in different decades and different stages of life.  She weaves this creative fiction with the historic fiction surrounding Frances Gerety - the woman who, while working as a copywriter in 1947, coined the tag line "A diamond is forever."

The Engagements explores how those four words have forever changed the way her characters (and we readers!) view the diamond engagement ring and the perceived value (in money or love) it represents.

Signed copies of The Engagements - and her previous novels, Commencement and Maine - are on our shelves.
