In the Spotlight...
with Jean-Pierre Barral, DO
by Theresa Devereux, DO (Non-Practicing Osteopath)

Jean-Pierre Barral is a French osteopath

and physiotherapist known for developing visceral manipulation Cited by Time Magazine as one of the top innovators for alternative medicine to watch for the millennium, Jean-Pierre's work has reached a global audience.

He has written several books, lectures all over the world and has established The Barral Institute which provides research and training on visceral, vascular and neural manipulation and manual therapies for the fascia and membranes.

Yet, for all of that, in this interview, I was struck by his humility, commitment, humor and uncomplicated approach to osteopathy which reminded me very much of the spirit that permeated much of our training at the BSO in the eighties.

After qualifying at the ESO in 1974, he taught bio-mechanics for several years and also taught osteopathy to medical students at the Faculty of Medicine of Paris North at a time when it was illegal to practice osteopathy in France. He is now Chairman of the Department of Visceral Manipulation Osteopathy at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris and Grenoble.........In 1990, he co-founded the International College of Osteopathy in St Etienne and he has practiced privately in France for 42 years.

And, now Some Humor
from the Desk of Jean-Pierre

A patient after his 1st appointment with me told me

"You know, I feel much better after your session."

As I like to tease my patients,

I told him "For the first time it works; I feel happy!"

He went to see the secretary who asked him "Would you like another appointment?"

He said, "No, Mr Barral told me it's very seldom he has results."

!!!!!!!!!!! Too Funny !!!!!!!!!

The patient came back 3 months later for another session.

Concussion and PTSD Intensive Therapy Programs and Research Studies
New Dates Announced

Due to the overwhelming success of our pilot Concussion Intensive Therapy program and Research Study with former NFL players, the Dr. John E. Upledger Foundation is dedicated to the ongoing development of future programs and the valuable research they yield.

On September 24, 6 additional former NFL players will participate in a second Concussion Intensive Program. Several of those players are now warriors in the awareness campaign about the debilitating long term effects of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIS) and multiple concussions. We will continue to partner with them to spread the word that manual therapies including CST, NM, and VM are critical missing pieces in existing concussion treatment protocol for people of all ages.

January 2016, will be our next Military veterans PTSD Intensive Therapy Program and Research Study. If you are a certified therapist and would like to be considered for our ongoing programs, please fill out the Therapist Application found on the home page of the Upledger.org website.

Study Groups and Practice Groups

Enjoy the Benefits...

Study Groups create wonderful opportunities to practice the skills you have already learned and further your understanding of your chosen modality by sharing experiences and asking questions of other like-minded practitioners.

Study Groups include hands-on practice, techniques review and time available to have your questions answered.  Study Groups are led by Instructors, Teaching Assistants, or Certified Therapists.

Practice Groups are more informal, and allow for students to practice in order to prepare for further study.

Participant Testimonials...

"I've suffered numerous concussions over the years and  developed hydrocephalus while
playing in the National Football League (NFL) in 1981. During the 1981 season, I underwent emergency Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) Shunt brain surgery.

(A VP shunt is a long, flexible, plastic tube that drains cerebrospinal fluid from the brain. This is done so that pressure does not build up within the head. The tube goes from the brain to the abdomen.)

I've now survived 9 brain surgeries and several grand mal seizures.

Markus Koch, Super Bowl Champion, Washington Redskins 1986-1991
"For me, CranioSacral Therapy, Neural Manipulation and Visceral Manipulation have been keys element in unwinding and releasing old pain. The highly skilled Upledger and Barral therapists have facilitated an inward journey that has taken me to the core of my being, at the physical, mental and emotional realms, where the old contractions from years of hard driving and pounding had lodged.

"The Barral courses have been fantastic. I have completed VM1-4, Listening 1, NM 1-3 & MAUE. I cannot say enough positive things about them. The instructors are all very good, their anatomical knowledge is exceptional, the techniques are very useful, and the information you get on each course is great. I can highly recommend them to further your clinical knowledge, palpation and technical skills. As an osteopath, I use the techniques I have learnt on these courses daily and I see fantastic results with patients.''

- L. Bennett, Osteopath

''The detail, in-depth anatomical knowledge and finesse of this approach has helped me successfully treat a significant number of patients in my practice. Giving tools to unlocking chronic conditions such as carpal tunnel, while also expanding my repertoire to treat vascular and neural dysfunction. As a manual therapist we should have the commitment to practice at a surgical level. The Barral curriculum enforces this, and pushes your knowledge and hands to an in-depth and highly specific level.''

- S. Pakkiri, Osteopath
