September is Chronic Pain Awareness Month
Chronic pain is often due to long-term, unhealthy compensations that the body has been forced to make due to such causes as direct trauma, infections, repetitive movements from work or play, diet, environmental toxins or emotional stress. These can lead to adhesions that restrict movement of the viscera, cause fixations of the nerves, as well as compress the joints.
When the body is able to move freely, it is able to function optimally without pain. Visceral Manipulation, Neural Manipulation and New Manual Articular Approach are excellent modalities to assist our patients toward optimal movement and function, thereby enabling the body to heal its many ailments and chronic pain.
Celebrate this month knowing you are offering a great service to your patients.

The Rational Treatment of Visceral Ptoses
Transactions of the American Climatological Association. 1906; 22:127 by Dr. John Madison Taylor.
After having just completed VM2 (fantastic!) - I wanted to share a paper I'd found in my research for classes (a PT student at the time). From 1906, it is entitled "The Rational Treatment of Visceral Ptoses" by Dr. John Madison Taylor. It is a very interesting read, a fun read regardless of your interest - so flowery and narrative. But I found it compelling for the historic documentation of treatment of viscera and the commentary on the trend of the time toward surgeries for all things visceral. This doctor seems to be calling for practitioners to rely on their clinical expertise rather than cutting everyone open to treat.

Principles of VM
by Marc Heller, DC
I am not sure why it has taken me so long, but after 104 articles, I am finally writing about visceral manipulation.
Let's begin with some background on how I started studying visceral work. In 1994, I worked in an interdisciplinary clinic, where I got to rub shoulders with a manipulating osteopath. I had always been interested in low-force methods, but this was my first introduction to the osteopathic ways of using low-force manipulation. I was impressed by the osteopathic methods and sought out a way to learn them.
Most PTs who do manual therapy use methods originally developed in osteopathy. Relatively few DOs in the U.S. are primarily manual practitioners, although some certainly are, and they can be very good. DCs generally are not exposed to the osteopathic model unless we search outside of our own profession.
What I like about osteopathic manipulation methods are their subtlety. Muscle energy and counterstrain use minimal force to move joints. The methods depend on patient positioning and in the case of muscle energy, small contractions of the patient's musculature, followed by relaxation while the joint is moved.

Receiving Treatment Will Make You a Better Therapist...
The following is a testimonial by a therapist in Australia who received a session
which included Visceral Manipulation, Neural Manipulation and Visceral Vascular Manipulation.
"Just thought I'd give you an update for your interest. My singing is exciting to use as a fine tuned barometer with how things are going - I'm finding it really interesting (and great!) with how things have changed with your one treatment. My left soft palate feels so unrestricted now to elevate with preparation to sing, something which had been bugging me for ages! As I mentioned to you, the change between my vowels is so much easier than previously, when I had to work very hard cognitively for placement to have something that wasn't nearly as smooth. Thank you! My breath also now feels 'connected' to my abdomen and the pressures feel like I can better expand my left ribs and maintain this without it 'collapsing' as previously. I'm looking forward to even more changes with this.

Study Groups create wonderful opportunities to practice the skills you have learned and further your understanding of your chosen modality by sharing experiences and asking questions of other like-minded practitioners.
|
With so much focus on each patient, it may be difficult to keep track of the business side of your manual therapy practice. In fact, quite a few manual therapists enter this field with little knowledge about business, and little desire to concentrate on basic business concepts.
