In this short educational film, produced by Hawaii Youth Services Network, youth are given an opportunity to understand sexual diseases such as HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

This guide highlights 13 points for consideration when treating adolescent substance abuse disorders, as well as answers to frequently asked questions about drug abuse, adolescent drug abuse treatment methods and approaches, and the role of the family in identifying substance use and providing support for teens.

This document addresses the link between bullying and suicide related behavior, and explores school-based strategies to prevent and control both bullying and suicide related behavior.

 National Prevention Week 2014
National Prevention Week is a SAMHSA-supported annual health observance dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, substance abuse and mental health issues. National Prevention Week 2014 is about Our Lives. Our Health. Our Future.  SAMHSA will highlight the important role each of us has in maintaining a healthy life and ensuring a productive future.
 
 
The National Prevention Week 2014 Participant Toolkit equips communities with information and resources for planning an event to help prevent substance use and promote mental, emotional, and behavioral wellness. Includes event ideas, budgeting tips, fact sheets, promotional tools, and additional resources. 

There are many ways to make a difference.  Explore the National Prevention Week website to learn more about how you can get involved, from planning a community event to participating in the "I Choose" Project.   
 

Although some advocates want to lower the legal drinking age from 21, research continues to show that the law saves lives. That's the finding of a new review published in a special supplemental issue to the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs. 

Study Finds Even Casual Marijuana Use Changes the Brain

Heavy marijuana use has been linked with impaired motivation, attention, learning and memory, but common beliefs maintain that casual use of the drug does not result in any negative outcomes. Now, a new study suggests young adults who smoke marijuana at least once a week have altered areas of the brain involved in emotion and motivation. 

 

Teen Brain Wired to Take Risks
Scientists found that the adolescent brain is extra sensitive to the rewarding signals it gets when something better than expected happens. The discovery might help explain why teens take risks that don't seem worth it to adults -- from driving too fast to experimenting with drugs.

In celebration of the month, TeenLink Hawaii is happy to announce the start of the annual ONLINE QUIZ created by teens for teens.  MTPPM is a nationally recognized month dedicated to providing teens with information on pregnancy prevention and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). May is Mental Health Month and this year's theme is "Mind Your Health." The goals are to build public recognition about the importance of mental health to overall health and wellness; inform people of the ways that the mind and body interact with each other; and provide tips and tools for taking positive actions to protect mental health and promote whole health. Prevention Resource Center
The Prevention Resource Center (PRC) Lending Library and Resource Center houses Hawaii and the Pacific Jurisdiction's most comprehensive resource center.  The PRC is excited each year to work in partnership and know that, through its multifaceted services, we can continue to reach all communities to further the education and awareness in keeping our Hawaii drug free.  To learn more about the PRC's outreach services click here.

Webinar: Social Host Policies From Theory to Practice

This training seeks to show how your organization can develop, promote, and encourage public compliance with effective social host legislation as it pertains to underage drinking! Experienced national, state and community prevention experts will discuss the effectiveness of state laws and local ordinances as well as the challenges that face them.

Ethics for Addiction Professionals 
Date: June 20, 2014

Location: Maui Youth & Family Services, Ekahi Building (Maui)

 

Through the use of exercises, group discussion and case vignettes, ethical decision making will be explored and applied using the principles of the proposed revisions to the Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) Code of Ethics.

Every year, alcohol consumption during pregnancy leads to the birth of 40,000 children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). In this 2-minute video, and this 30 second alternative version, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) seeks to promote awareness about abstaining from alcohol while pregnant.

SAMHSA's "Caring for Every Child's Mental Health" public awareness effort was created in 1994 with the mission to increase awareness around children's mental health. Marijuana & Public Health: Health Issues at a Glance
Science has learned more about marijuana in the past 20 years than in the preceding two centuries. Ironically, however, there has been a major disconnection between the scientific knowledge gained and the public's understanding of the drug.
